Say what you will, but a wasted Tyler is damn fun. "what you will" Just kidding. I agree, damn fun. Is it the drugs that make him more entertaining? The age old question... My guess is no. I think during periods when an artist is feeling extreme lust for life(which is what leads to the creativity) they're more likely to reach out to drugs because they want to experience things. Live life to the fullest, etc. Of course they often overdo it and it ends up counterproductive.

And, the band have often said that in the beginning the drugs helped fuel the creative process, but eventually they did go too far and the drugs tore the band apart. But again, was it the drugs or was it exhaustion from the constant tour/record/tour/record grind year after year and living in close proximity with the same 5 people all that time which is bound to breed contempt? Most likely a combination of all of these.

Besides great kickass music, Aerosmith being dangerously exciting was something that made them seem cool "back in the day". Nowadays, ST tries to mimic this by saying "fuck" in the middle of the sentence "Falling in love is so hard on the knees." Not quite the same effect, but give him 50 cents (and only 50 cents) for trying.

I have a difficult time ascribing talent to drug addiction. I guess the evidence of their stage presence is there but honestly I cringe sometimes at Tyler's vocals on some of the lost in between albums. I wonder if Tyler was at his peak and not being propped up behind a microphone how powerful a song like Cry Me A River or Bitches Brew could've been.
Plus no matter what one thinks about how the drugs made him fun to watch perform, a living Tyler is better than an od'd puked and choked to death on his own vomit Tyler that easily could've happened. I wish more stars from that era would've focused on honing their talent instead of shooting up. Imagine what Hendrix or Joplin could've released down the line. Sure some of it might've sucked, but not all of of it would've.
