On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary made her first of six appearances to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal.
The final apparition would occur on October 13, 1917, when the "Miracle of the Sun" took place.
The apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima were declared by the Church to be "worthy of belief" in October of 1930.
During these appearances, Our Lady of Fatima conveyed to the three children some very simple yet powerful messages.
A bullet-point synopsis of the messages is as follows:
The fires of Hell are real and human souls go there
Sacrifices and prayers, especially the Rosary, will save souls from Hell
Most souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh (sexual sins)
Amend your lives and ask pardon for your sins
The Fires of Hell Are Real and Human Souls Go There
The immensity of this reality is so critical to the proper Catholic understanding of sin, love, sacrifice and salvation. This is especially important to combat the errant theology of "a reasonable hope that all men are saved" first pushed by Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar and now adopted by modern-day evangelist Fr. Robert Barron.
Because of fallen human nature, the spiritual life is a constant battle against sin and temptation. If this battle is not fought, the default consequence of sin is death and the fires of Hell. When we understand and accept this, it more clearly emphasizes why we refer to Jesus Christ as Our Lord and Savior.
Christ is Savior because He saves us from the fires of Hell. That is of course if we amend our lives and ask pardon for our sins (more on that later).
If we're going to love Christ Our Savior more deeply, we must meditate often on what exactly He is saving us from: eternal separation from God and the tortures of Hell.
If Christ Our Savior is real, then the fires of Hell must also be real.
Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form. ... The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repulsive likeness to frightful and unknown animals, all black and transparent. This vision lasted but an instant. How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind heavenly Mother, who had already prepared us by promising, in the first Apparition, to take us to Heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of fear and terror.
Sacrifices and Prayers, Especially the Rosary, Will Save Souls from Hell
Then we raised our eyes to Our Lady, who said with kindness and sadness: "You have seen Hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. ... Pray, pray a great deal and make many sacrifices, for many souls go to Hell because they have no one to make sacrifices and to pray for them."
It is no secret of Catholic theology that we are called to share in the sufferings of Christ crucified. This is mentioned explicitly by St. Paul in Colossians 1:24: "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church. ..."
These sacrifices and sufferings can be practical penances, fasting and almsgiving. An easy-to-remember adage of Catholic spirituality is that "the innocent pay for the guility." Our Lord set the standard for us poor sinners by enduring the Crucifixion. We should imitate and join our sacrifices to His ultimate Sacrifice to help save souls from the fires of Hell.
Pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace in the world. ... When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: "O Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy."
Most Souls Go to Hell because of "Sins of the Flesh"
Pornography, fornication, homosexuality, masturbation and adultery — the list of sexual sins that afflict our modern culture is almost endless.
These are sins that entice and destroy the innocence of human souls created for the purity and love of God.
Simply put, if you're engaged in any of these activities in any form, without repentance, you will go to Hell.
More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason. Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much. "Woe to women lacking in modesty."
Despite what the feminist culture may say about men controlling their sexual urges around scantily clad women, Our Lady of Fatima wishes to warn women that lacking in modesty falls into the category of sins of the flesh, a grave sin deserving of Hell. Our Blessed Mother even explicitly mentions there will be many clothing fashions that will be particularly offensive to Our Lord. Yoga pants and bikinis come to mind.
As always, our Blessed Mother is desperately trying to instill in us the virtues of purity, modesty and chastity.
Amend Your Lives and Ask Pardon for Your Sins
The simplicity of the spiritual life: We all must turn from our wicked ways and ask Our Lord for Mercy.
If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives. ... Fly from riches and luxury; love poverty and silence; have charity, even for bad people. ... Confession is a sacrament of mercy and we must confess with joy and trust.
The messages of Fatima are simple and yet have powerful eternal consequences. Let us take seriously Our Blessed Mother's warnings and admonishments.
Pray the rosary, sacrifice for love of neighbor, repent of your sins, especially sexual sin, and confess them with trust in Our Lord's Mercy.
If we take seriously the messages of Fatima, mankind can truly be saved from the fires of Hell.
May Our Lord grant us this grace through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
