Wednesday was World Giraffe Day, so here are a few photos taken over this past year. Taken at the Dublin Zoo in early March, before we went to the Saxon show later that day. There's a raised path going along the African Savanna area and we got lucky enough for a giraffe to come towards us there. --- Taken at the Zurich Zoo in mid March, the day after the Kreator show. Just like at the Dublin Zoo, there's a raised path along the Lewa Savanna area, as well as a two level building where you can see the giraffes when they're indoors. --- Taken at Tierpark Berlin (the zoo location in former East Berlin) on my birthday. This was probably the coldest day of that trip and all giraffes were inside. One of them came to smell me and she seemed less than impressed. The little one was born last year. As tiny as she looks compared to mom... baby giraffes are still taller than me when they're born! --- Taken at the Vienna Zoo in early July last year, before I saw Die Toten Hosen. Her name is Amari. She was born in early 2022. She had a rough start in life as her young and inexperienced mom was a bit lost about what to do. This may happen in the wild as well. Fortunately, in this case, she could be bottle fed. She's doing well. Here's a more recent video. --- Every giraffe spot pattern is unique, just like human fingerprints. They have very long tongues that can reach about 50cm! Their tongues have lots of muscles and they can be used to grab things by wrapping around them. To a lesser extent, giraffes also use their lips to grab things. Their tongues are dark to prevent sunburn. Since they stick their tongues out a lot in order to grab food, this is a pretty cool adaptation.

Nara, Japan From what I understand, they're like the goats at the Berlin Zoo... they'll snatch anything they can from you! Maybe, just maybe, it's food. I must have been a pretty funny sight chasing that goat to get my stolen map back...
