I got sick of my birthday being a miserable day for me every year and decided to book a trip for it. So this year for my birthday I have booked a week at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Not going for any specific shows or anything. Just to drink, eat, gamble and drive around the Nevada desert. (Not all in that order, this isn't Fear and Loathing).

Tiny venue (200 capacity), sold out, everyone having a good time… hope they actually make it big so I can say “I saw them when…” 😉

I made a cake last week. Base is crushed ladyfingers with butter, cream is basically whipped cream with quite a bit of salted caramel Irish Cream liqueur, half of it mixed with melted chocolate to have two different cream colours. Middle layers are spiced chopped apples (which can be found in the jelly on top too) and booze-soaked butter waffles. Around, there are choc chip butter ladyfingers and chocolate flakes. On top of all, there are mini biscuits shaped like little men and stars.

I petted some bears yesterday I took a bus and went up in the resort some 500m up to see if there's more snow there than in the city... there is, but mostly due to it not being cleaned and not stepped on by so many people. There's probably more at the top of the mountain, but I couldn't afford the cable car and I wasn't equipped to go on foot, so that was it. And I'm 5 years old, apparently, shaking snow from the trees to fall on me... I wasn't sure how much I'd sink into the untouched snow, so I did try to be careful whenever I stepped somewhere new. But a normal adult probably wouldn't have done any of it in the first place. Still, this past weekend brought the very first snow of the winter so far. To say this has been a warm winter overall would be an understatement. I have never before in my life experienced temperatures in double digits with plus in January. Throughout December & January, we pretty much had the same weather we had in April last year. Even now with the snow, it's barely hovering around freezing, a few degrees below or above. The temperature displayed at the cable car station was -4°C (that's Celsius, where 0°C is the freezing point). That's still a high temperature for January here.

I'd catapult you one if that worked. They smell and taste very nice. I'm still not completely happy with them... I went a bit overboard with the decorations, maybe I should have stuck to just two or three different ones for each. Maybe just the almond flakes and the white chocolate flakes and perhaps the little biscuit men for a dark choc glaze... stuff like that. I'm also a bit disappointed the dough didn't grow more. It did grow, but not as much as I expected. Dunno, maybe it was still too cold in the kitchen? After two months of very warm winter, we're in the middle of a two week period of something that's a bit more like real winter. And the kitchen is never really heated because it gets warmer when you turn the stove or oven on anyway. But I didn't turn either on while I let the dough grow, so who knows. It wasn't too cold for me, but it may have been too cold for the dough... But I guess lots of other things may have gone even worse for a very first try ever. I pretty much followed this recipe. Except for the glaze. I didn't have fondant and I'm not fond of it anyway. So I just melted a bit of dark chocolate for two of them and then white chocolate for the rest. After I got two white chocolate ones done, I added a bit of orange juice to the remaining white chocolate to make look it a bit orangey.

I'm going to Dublin in a couple of days to see Saxon. They announced it last year and it was tempting from the start, but after the Kreator tour fiasco... it was both being disillusioned and having wasted so much money I could have used for so many other things (health, a new laptop). And flight prices had gone up so much in 2022.
So it was a bit of keep your hopes high and your expectations low. Miraculously, with just two weeks in advance, I found much cheaper flights than in 2022. And while there was a low ticket warning, the show was not yet sold out. Deep breath and... yeah, take the trip.
Sometimes (often?) it feels like my life is accelerating past me. There's so much happening and I just cannot keep up. It feels like that regardless of where I am. I was just much calmer about it during my October concert trip.

Life is a roller coaster for sure! It seems yesterday I went back to university at 27 but there have been all sorts of shenanigans ever since: a pandemic, wars, economic collapse, political mess, crazy lawsuits, I changed 2 jobs and I still have to finish writing my thesis!
I hope everyone can reach some of the goals set for 2023. I personally aim to finally graduate albeit a bit late, increase my salary negotiating a better contract with either my current company or another one, have fun in Japan this April and start a serious financial plan to save and invest some money. Time to grow up but it's important to keep our inner child alive and well.

I went to the Dublin Zoo last Friday together with the friend from uni who hosted me once more so that I could keep the budget of this week long trip under 150€ = 2x30 (flights) + 50 (concert) + 20 (zoo) + local transportation & food (mostly Irish chocolate because fuck knows when I'll go back). Because why not get in the mood for the Saxon show later that evening by seeing some animals on World Wildlife Day... and because the weather forecast said it would be a nice day. Well... fuck the weather man! It rained for the first half of our zoo visit and I was f-f-f-freezing! And I was not the only one. One sign along the zoo trail said something like: "Are you cold? So are our orangutans! If you don't see them outside, they're probably indoors..." Yes, they were! Not just indoors, but also wrapping themselves in thin textile blankets and hay. Those ear covers or whatever you call them? Those things looking fucking weird in combination with my bun underneath my beanie not knowing which way to spill over? They're not mine. My friend gave them to me because my beanie was not enough to keep my ears from feeling like they'll fall off. Fucking sideways rain...
