Yikes! Tom Petty has reportedly been taken off life support after being hospitalized in 'full cardiac arrest'John Lynch Business InsiderOctober 2, 2017 Singer-songwriter Tom Petty was hospitalized Sunday night after he was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest in his Malibu home, TMZ reports. Law enforcement sources told the outlet that Petty was taken to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, and was put "on life support." Authorities told The Hollywood Reporter they responded to a Malibu home for a man who suffered a heart attack. Though their sources couldn't confirm it was Petty, they said the man was in "critical condition." TMZ has since reported that Petty had "no brain activity" when he got to the hospital, and that "a decision was made to pull life support." The 66-year-old singer, famous for his music with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, wrapped a long tour at the end of September. Petty's band gained commercial and critical success throughout the late 1970s, starting with their debut self-titled album, which spawned the hit singles "American Girl" and "Breakdown." His highest-charting single, "Free Fallin,'" was released in 1989 and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard singles chart. Petty has been nominated for 18 Grammy awards. He won two Grammys as a solo artist and one for his contribution to the supergroup album "The Traveling Wilbury's Vol. 1." Still alive? Depends which site you check...no one is sure apparently. Most sites seem to agree there is no brain activity, and a few say he won't last the day, if not already passed.

Well, his daughter isn't taking this lightly. Not that I blame her.

This is sad. There was always something unique about Tom Petty in that he was a big rock star, yet seemed like just an ordinary guy. He dressed like a regular guy, looked like a regular guy (although the ladies certainly seemed to love his music), he even appeared shy and uncomfortable when doing interviews. Then he'd get on stage and just seem seem so comfortable and relaxed. Plenty of bassists and drummers have these qualities, but it's very rare for lead singers.
He never seemed to have any gimmick or try to pretend he was someone he wasn't. He just went out there and did his thing and the people really related. He appeared fit and healthy, I guess there just is no way of knowing when somebody's heart is going to go.
Another block of songs on my playlist being sung by someone who is no longer of this earth. That list has grown way too fast over the past few years.

Seems like its real. Really sucks. 66 is not young but it's too young to die. Great music.

Not that we, the people, have any right to other's private struggles, but I hate the way some of these deaths come out of the blue like this. I had not heard anything about Tom or Bowie or Prince before they were suddenly gone.
As Voodoo said, another set of songs that I hear regularly are now sung by a lost idol. I'm not a huge Tom Petty fan, but there are a few that are great, none that are bad, and American Girl is in my top 20. He will always be a huge part of my teen years. Rest in peace Tom, you earned it.

Sad news from out of nowhere. Saw him four or five times always a great show. Really cool and laid back cat. RIP Tom.

I was surprised & disappointed that neither Aerosmith, Joe or Steven offered condolences on social media. Many many artists from their generation were quick to offer sympathies. Tom Petty is a legend & cut his rock teeth in the 70's just as they did. I didn't see it on Facebook, so if they did so elsewhere I stand corrected.

We can still enjoy Tom's endless discography of Rock N Roll perfection.

Tom and band were under my radar for most of my youth. Over the last 20 years I have really grown to appreciate their music. Strong songs, strong musicianship, never showing off, but always impressive. Tom had a way of making the simplest chord progressions into something special and memorable. The band always seemed to know what to play in order to complement Tom. Another loss to the music world.

As mentioned above, here is my favorite.
They got one lyric wrong, but the best part is correct:
Well, it was kinda cold that night She stood alone on the balcony Yeah, she could the cars roll by Out on 441 Like waves crashin' on the beach And for one desperate moment there He crept back in her memory God it's so painful Something that's so close Is still so far out of reach
