I was surprised & disappointed that neither Aerosmith, Joe or Steven offered condolences on social media. Many many artists from their generation were quick to offer sympathies. Tom Petty is a legend & cut his rock teeth in the 70's just as they did. I didn't see it on Facebook, so if they did so elsewhere I stand corrected. Here's Joey at least...

Is Joeys coffee business alright? Heard his cafe's both closed. I did hear that as well. I think he's focusing on internet sales now. Although, I haven't heard much of that either. Then again, I don't go on Twitter much either.

Wow, he looks and sounds great in that video. A very young looking 66 with no signs of being winded, fatigued or any heart related issues. It really must have come out of nowhere.

I was tripped out about Elvis dying, actually cried about Michael Hutchence and Tom Petty seems a loss for words.

Tom Petty’s Cause of Death Revealed: Accidental Pain Medication OverdoseMatthew Wilkening Tom Petty died of an accidental overdose on pain medication, according to an official statement from his family this evening. The Heartbreakers frontman passed away last October shortly after completing a tour celebrating the band's 40th anniversary. Despite being diagnosed with a fractured hip and being prescribed "various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches" with over 50 dates remaining, Petty's family said he insisted on completing the tour.
"On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break," the statement explains. "It is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication."Prince, who famously performed "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Petty at the 2004 Rock Hall induction ceremony, died of a Fentanyl overdose in April of 2016. "As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives," the statement reads. "Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications." The full statement is below. Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications. Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip. Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury. On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication. We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident. As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications. On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed. We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months. Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately. We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time. I'm still reeling (not sure if this is formally the correct word) from this. Sounds like he was in a lot of pain but still wanted to Rock. Well, that's Tom Petty. I would have loved to have him around for some more years.

I saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 1978 at the Knebworth Festival, about 30 miles north of London. It was my 2nd ever gig. I really went to see Genesis who were headlining. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Jefferson Starship were also on the bill. So I was very pleased about that. Tom and the guys had just released their 2nd album. They played a storming set and the 60,000 crowd were really into it. Just what was needed to get everyone warmed up. Starship had to play without Grace Slick. She got fired from the band the week before following various "incidents" in the warm up gigs in Germany. So Marty Balin took most of the vocals. They were great too. Roy Harper opened up the festival in the cold and the rain, but he's not mentioned on the poster. Attachments:

From the old days when we had proper music programs on mainstream television. The best one we ever had, the Old Grey Whistle Test, the BBC removed it from the air in 1988. And it has never returned
