Rock Against Trafficking: Slash, Steven Tyler Cover The Police on Benefit AlbumBy Gary Graff | May 13, 2014 11:35 AM EDT A cadre of rockers has joined forces for a new album to help combat the issue of global child slavery. Coming as the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram is threatening to sell nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls into slavery, "Set Them Free" features songs by the Police and Sting covered by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Slash, Journey's Neal Schon and Arnel Pineda, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Julian Lennon, Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze), Free alumnus Andy Fraser and EnVogue to support and raise funds for Rock Against Trafficking (R.A.T.), a new nonprofit group dedicated to raise awareness of and fight for an end to child slavery worldwide. The set is being curated and produced by R.A.T. founder Gary Stewart, and Schon tells Billboard that a September concert in the U.K. has also been broached. "This is for a very good cause," says Schon, who recorded the Police's "Synchronicity II" with Pineda for the project. "All kinds of artists are on this record. "All these different versions of their songs will be on the album, and hopefully a live show that will probably be filmed for the benefit." In a statement, R.A.T.'s Stewart says that, "27 million people are slaves today. 80 percent of trafficking victims are women and girls. Fifty percent are minors, and every year two million children are exploited in the global sex trade. We are joining together in a solid commitment through music to make a difference." R.A.T.'s Director of Public Relations John Schayer adds, "It is our goal to unite people around the world to join us in this heartfelt effort to stop child trafficking and send the children home." A release date, full track listing and other details are set to be announced in the near future. www.billboard.com/articles/news/6084852/rock-against-trafficking-slash-heart-steven-tyler-sting-police

What a waste of time. This crap accomplishes nothing! It just makes everybody feel good about themselves (the liberal way). It does not help or fix the problem in any way! What a joke.

You're right, let's all just give up and do nothing.

All of this nonsense IS doing nothing. But hey as long as you feel you are accomplishing something I guess that's all that matters.

I agree that holding up signs on the internet is doing very little to help, other than possibly getting some people to donate to the cause. But an actual fund raising effort such as this one, I don't see as 'doing nothing'. The money raised will go to an organization that is working to free the girls and to prosecute the ones that do these things.
Saying it is hopeless and doing nothing is doing nothing.

I am cynical in that they trip over a different 1000 girls missing over there, or a million that have been wiped out over some place else to get to the 300. However except for my irritation of that what harm are they doing. i can't even criticize our government for getting involved. Would rather they find 300 girls and not wipe out Iraq or try and start crap with Putin in Ukraine.

It is easy to become cynical when one sees something like this. So often we "hear" stars lamenting a cause, but holding on to their pocketbook with a tight grip. At the same time, an event like the one described above can bring a wider awareness to the general public, who likewise can be ignorant or indifferent to the plight of people across the world and in our own country. So it is a double edge sword. Now if Steven and Slash go the extra mile and donate an equitable sum of money based on their income, then it becomes more meaningful.

I've noticed over the years in the many charities the boys have donated to, the sum always seems to be 10k. There must be some tax doohickey. Always thought that was weird . . .

^ 10K is nothing to sneeze at. I work for a non-profit, and a 10K donation is significant.

Now you mentioned that Hattah, 10 k was the exact sum Steven donated for the Boston Habitat House. The only one I can think of where 100's of thousands was mentioned but no amount confirmed was Sea Shepherds. I thought that was weird cause at the time that organisation was targeting Japanese whalers and one of Aerosmith's biggest markets is Japan.

If memory serves they only donated signed stuff to be auctioned off. The largest number for them is 25k I think, which breaks down to 5k per band member . . . most recently for the Duxbury animal shelter. 10s and 25s lol . . . it's a conspiracy.
