Seeing that headline tonight brought a knot to the pit of stomach.
I remember right around this time last year Roth made some cryptic comments that the message board community interpreted as Eddie was dying from cancer. Quite a few were claiming it was a known fact. I'd search for Van Halen news every couple of months hoping to hear something to the contrary, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.
They were one of my favorite bands as a kid. I remember the original lineup reunion almost happening so many times and then falling through. I finally saw them in 08 and it was my most disappointing concert ever. I really didn't even listen to them again until hearing that speculation last year. It was good listening to their music again.
Very sad news tonight though, another one gone far too young.

Trending on Yahoo this morning was Sammy Hagar. I clicked it to see if he had died, and was VERY shocked to see it was Eddie who has passed.
I have seen every configuration of VH live, and the reunion with DLR was by far the worst. Eddie was a fucking god, and his style changed the way guitar was played (by some) forever after. RIP EVH.

R.I.P Eddie. Never saw them live but those first few VH records were phenomenal. Not too much you can say one of if not the greatest guitar player ever.

This one was definately a punch in the gut. There are plenty of bands I like better but I do love Van Halen.. Eddie was such an icon.. VH was just engrained in anyone that grew up n t lheate 70's/Early 80's lives whether we knew it or not.. This one just sucks.. Aside from trying to listen to the new AC/DC song this morning it has been Van Halen all last night and all day today. That will continue through the week.
I have a question for you Coop. I have heard you comment on the reunion tour and say Dave was awful. ARe you sure it was the 2007 reunion tour or one of the tours they did with him after? Maybe the one they did in 2012 when they released their album? Only reason I ask is because I thought they were awesome in 2007 when I saw them. I have seen videos from my show and others from that year and Dave sounded good. I mean he was never a great singer but he sounded good. I don't remember hearing any complaints until the next tour in 2012 for Different Kind Of Truth. He all of a sudden sounded bad (as heard on the live album). Then there was one more tour in 2015 where he was even worse.. I still wish I went to that tour though... I remember I had tickets for Gordon Lightfoot already on that date lol.. VH were playing a few days later in Maine but I couldn't get anyone to make the trip.. Should have just went alone.. Life is short.

^ October 5, 2007 at Mohegan Sun. Dave was 'singing' every 3rd word or so, and Eddie's guitar solo was kind of a train wreck too. Still a fun show though, and overall Eddie sounded great.
I did see Dave on a solo tour with Steve Vai, and he sounded good back then. It was a bit cool and weird at the same time to see Steve playing Eruption note for note.

That would have been a fun tour to see. Never knew that Vai was playing Eruption though.. That is kind of tacky..

I still remember hearing songs from VH first 5 albums or so on rock radio in the early 80's. They were so ingrained in rock 'n roll minds at the time. Apart from AC/DC I don't thing you could say that about many bands around that time. Brings back the times when it was actually fun to listen to "regular" radio. VH a huge part of that.

I only saw Van Halen twice, 1978 and 1984 or 85. They were terrific both times. Eddie was mesmerizing to be sure. He had both strong stage presence and phenomenal playing. And I am not only referring to the guitar solos. He was an all-round amazing player. His rhythm playing was as great as his lead playing. A major figurehead in the world of guitar and music. Eddie, you will be missed.

Running With The Devil is without a doubt my favorite VH song. The rhythm part seems very simple but its still so raw, catching and spot on. You can hear a lot of that in other VH songs as well. But that one stands out the most to me.
