Thank god for these aging musicians and their common sense! Where would we be if we had to rely on scientists and doctors for advice during a pandemic?

Clapton has been known to say some pretty douchey things.
Let the music do the talking, pal.

Hey, have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He might not know that Eric Clapton is a self-confessed racist, misogynistic, woman-beating wife-rapist…

In more interesting pandemic news, the "what was all that toilet paper needed for?" mystery has been solved. http://instagram.com/p/B_KO2RmHboH Damn, imagine being this fit...

That’s why he’s against it. I don’t blame him. If you don’t think the government is lying about people dying from the vaccine, you are truly a moron.

That’s why he’s against it. I don’t blame him. If you don’t think the government is lying about people dying from the vaccine, you are truly a moron. Almost died? Citation needed. Other than his letter to a fellow lockdown sceptic. Actual medical evidence. He almost died, so six weeks later he had the second jab? Or after the second jab he experienced symptoms of peripheral neuropathy which he has had for years, and might have had nothing to do with the second vaccine? I had a hangover after my second vaccine - must have been the jab, not the two bottles of Malbec Once again you fail to show any acknowledgement of a world outside America. Where are your government lying about about people dying from the vaccine? Please, once again, citation needed. And I don't mean "Tucker Carlson said" I mean actual proper figures and evidence that people have died as a result of the Covid vaccine, and it has been covered up. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...

Wrong…there is a good chance of dying from the covid vaccine. Unless you believe the crap the government is feeding you.

I don't have the time to write a novel, but here is what I have to say, bullet points: - don't just trust musicians, politicians, other celebrities or other random people on facebook (or internet forums for that matter) when it comes to scientific/ medical advice, regardless of the direction of their message; unless they actually have a degree and you can verify there are no other interests at play (if anyone can find my post here where I was bitching about a pretty illustration that was getting wrong what a polygon is going viral, that's a good example of false information spreading just because the packaging is appealing and people don't check; the fact that a lot of people make the mistake of calling power functions exponential functions is another big facepalm for me as a mathematician)
- I can understand people turn to such sources because some (most?) research papers use a language that's about as appealing as a skunk's anal scent glands, so here are a few useful resources for understanding the topic at hand: one, Fundamentals of Immunology - I went through a much less developed version of this about a decade ago and even that was enough for some core concepts to stick; two, Basic Statistics (I know there's Introduction to Statistics course on the platform as well, but I find that one feels dumbed down, not as good... still, feel free to take that with a grain of salt, I feel that way about way too many mathematical courses); three, Improving your statistical inferences; and maybe even four, Probability and Statistics: To p or not to p? though this is one that's not among my faves (again, I may be biased given I'm the product of an Eastern European sieve style education system)
- also, here's a crash course in critical thinking, what constitutes a good argument and what doesn't (disclaimer: written by a friend who works at Mozilla)
- in the meanwhile, until everyone has the scientific background to be discussing the topic of vaccine safety without "it must be sunny in the world somewhere" type of statements, here are the cold numbers: about 1 in 1000 people has an allergic reaction to one or more of the vaccine ingredients; yes, that is quite a lot, given this means that out of ~2 billion people vaccinated so far in the world, ~2 million have had an allergic reaction; at the same time, keep in mind that the % of people with food allergies is much higher - ~7% of people have food allergies compared to 0.1% have an allergic reaction to the vaccine; moreover, the risk of a severe allergic reaction to food is more than 200 times higher than the risk of a severe reaction to the vaccine (numbers are for Pfizer, for which we have the most data); which means we're in the thousands of severe allergic reactions worldwide if everyone on the planet gets vaccinated (pretty good considering a 0.1% death rate from the virus would mean 8 million people dying if everyone on the planet caught it); also, such allergic reactions don't take long to manifest themselves and that's why the protocol requires that they keep you under observation for at least 15 minutes after you get the vaccine, so they can intervene to prevent you from dying in the unlikely event of anaphylaxis; and before you get the vaccine, you're also supposed to fill in a form where they ask you about allergies among other stuff (at least that's the procedure in Romania and in Germany)
- the chances for other side effects (TTS, myocarditis, pericarditis) are way lower than for an allergic reaction and I believe nobody here except me is a part of any of the categories most likely to be at risk for these (and Clapton certainly isn't)
- speaking of Clapton, what he describes sounds an awful lot like Guillain-Barré syndrome (definitely far from "almost died" though); if he has that and got the vaccine without talking to a doctor when he's a rich old dude who can afford the best healthcare in the world, then boy, is he stupid...
- I'd also like to point out that the studies that came to the conclusion the covid vaccines that have been approved in the little bubble of high income economies are pretty damn safe have been carried out by international pharmacovigilance research networks, not controlled by any government; for further questions, you may pester the researchers that actually worked on them (I got an email for one m.c.j.sturkenboom@umcutrecht.nl and I may dig for more if anyone is actually interested in the research)
