For anyone that missed it
AEROSMITH’S JOE PERRY EXPLAINS WHY DRUMMER JOEY KRAMER WILL NOT BE ON THE BAND’S FAREWELL TOUR May 4, 2023
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was a recent guest of Byrd of 97.1 FM The Drive, where he explains why drummer Joey Kramer, will not be joining the band on their upcoming Peace Out farewell tour.
Perry said (via blabbermouth.net), “His heart’s in the right place, but, listen, playing the drums is an athletic event. And there’s a certain point where you’re just kind of, like,… every joint starts to give out, man. So, at this point we’re not thinking he’s gonna be there. We’ll see.”
When the band announced its farewell tour earlier this week, they released a statement, that said, “While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health. Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”
For the past year, the band’s longtime drum tech John Douglas has been filling in on drums for Kramer.

"His heart is in the right place..."
Makes me think Joey wants to be involved...

It seems to me to be a similar situation to Bill Ward and Sabbath. The band and the drummer want to be there, but their various managers can't reach a compromise regarding the physical abilities of the drummer. Shame when it becomes solely about 'business'.

Joey wants to play, cut the crap. I will believe this only when Joey himself will admit this but he filed a lawsuit. This is ridiculous. Call me a hater but this is gross. I am lucky I saw them always with the full line up. It was a good ride. Peace Out indeed.

I am lucky I saw them always with the full line up. It was a good ride. Peace Out indeed. Someone posted a pic of Joey here the other day and I must admit that he did not look capable. I won't body shame him as I don't know the reasons why he may look as out of shape as he does. There can be medical reasons or he may have decided to enjoy some of his well earned riches without paying the price next day in the gym. A young guy can carry that belly and play the drums like a pro. I dunno about a guy in his 70s. I agree that the band's performance is largely lacking and missing that funk in his absence. However, I too would like for Joey to come out and say something to endorse this tour in his absence, and give credence to Mr. Perry's remarks. That would go a long way in the Aero community.

People are making way too much out of this. The guy is old for a drummer. He most likely doesn't have the chops or physical ability/stamina to tour and perform at a high level anymore. This happens all the time to drummers as they age. The last time I saw him drumming he looked like he was about to have a heart attack and that was quite awhile ago.
They made it work with the original 5 for far longer than any other 5 piece band has.. Nothing lasts forever.. Appreciate what we had. In a perfect world they would all stay younger forever. But this is life. It is astonishing they did it for as long as they did.

It sounds to me that him playing shows could be risky to his health. The most important thing is the health and safety of each band member, much more important than pleasing the fans.

If they came clean with this I wouldn't have a problem with the replacement. As far as we know, Joey wanted to tour and play, last time I saw him he sounded good. Granted they were not as fast and loud as the early 2000s or even as 2014, they still had their sound. It's not like Steven can hit all his high notes with power or Joe can play every note that sharply. They're old, we know that and we are don't care. This seems like an excuse to cover some hidden drama which is unfortunate.
After the lawsuit and hush hush about this, which has come as far as removing Joey's name and image from the band's material, I have zero respect for what's been happening.
If Joey comes out admitting he is unable to play and that he lets the band tour with his blessing, fair enough, but he doesn't look decrepit and I assume most fans would take a shorter set with him than a still short 15-16 songs set with that terrible fill-in drummer who's a pain for our ears.
Now I don't see Joe being replaced after his latest collapses due to "dehydration" while touring with that other "dads' band" or Steven forced to quit after his own silly me too lawsuit. Why Joey? Without any honesty regarding this situation, I sit out.
Now good luck promoting this tour and the GH album no one will buy given the horrendous publicity around the band and lack of hype, also the past cancellations surely will slow down ticket sales.
Without any kind of new product out, this tour seems a hard gamble.
But maybe I am wrong, I am petty hater, nobody cares about poor Joey and Jaded fans will come aplenty spending 1-2-3K on platinum tickets.
The only good thing so far is that they confirmed THX sound in all arenas which is quite exciting, you will be able to hear that horrible drummer splendidly from each seat in the arena.

Seems pretty bloody obvious, to me.

You do realise lawyers are involved, yeah? Legal implications.... Say the wrong thing and yer fucked. It goes way beyond 5 blokes just getting up on a stage and playing 'Walk This Way'. It's a multi-million pound organisation. I wish it wasn't, but that's how it is.

And to add to what tomass is saying Joey is not a timid little boy that can be bullied. He's a grown man, a seasoned veteran rock star and respected world class drummer who can and will fight for what he believes is his as he has shown in that past with the Grammy lawsuit (and that he put up with Steven's micromanaging for 50 years without killing him or himself). If HE wanted to have a part of this tour in any way I'm sure he would. To me it seems that Joey retired and he is enjoying his retired life. He might pop up here and there but to expect a full tour performance from him right now, it's silly.

I recall watching Joey some over half a decade ago and being impressed with how much energy he was putting into it, holy hell! He has the toughest job in the band, the fact that he could do it for as long as he could is still damn impressive. I can believe that at the age he is now, still doing that job is problematic. I do hope he is as well as he can be otherwise.
It would still be lovely if he showed up for a special show for a song or two.

Age is terrible to all of us. I got to see Clark Terry, one of the all time giants of Jazz, in his 80's: he sounded like a 4 year old trying and failing to play his horn and couldn't remember the names of the people in his band or how his own songs went. I also saw BB King on his last tour. He played "You are my sunshine" for 20+ minutes and kept stopping the band to "talk" to the audience. I put talk in quotes because it was a long ramble about nothing that would go on and on. It wasn't depressing just because of how bad it was, it was infuriating that there was no one close to these artists to stop them from going on the road. They didn't know to not go out there anymore and there was plenty of people happy to milk them for $$$ by sending them out there: no one let them keep their dignity.
I love Joey's drumming. The band is missing an essential piece without him, with his Motown inflicted swing. But he's much older now. He's had extremely bad health issues. By all accounts he just can't do it anymore: and there's no shame in that. So I'm going to go, and honor my favorite band doing one last victory lap. And I'll notice the drumming, but will raise my beer high in salute for all the great times, and all those albums I love.

My dad saw BB on that last tour as well. He said he'd play a 30 sec lick then introduce a band member who would get a ten minute solo. He was disappointed yet also grateful he got one more chance to see him.
