I for the most part disagree that people can not be anything they want. I think stupid people are rare. So it comes down to did you get sufficient education, think things through and not fuck up a lot and did you keep your priorities in check to reach that goal. I for one only achieved the last point! I have to disagree. Stupid people are not rare. They are all around us. We can't all play in the NFL, meaning there are super stars, the average, dummies and many in between. Either you were born with a brain that has the aptitude to learn mathematics and become an engineer or you don't. Many people are born with severe limitations, not talking about mental defects, but there are people not smart enough to accomplish much in life other than simple "blue collar" type tasks. Many of these people could be successful if they learned a simple trade that does not require a lot of brain power. But many of these people give up and never push themselves to be better, so they end up with low wage entry level jobs. I have owned a couple of restaurants and employed a girl from when she was 15 until 29, she worked off and on through college and law school. She got a P.H.D. in a separate field while in law school and working 20-30 hours per week. Law students are advised not to work at all, but her circumstances dictated she had to. The amount of reading and law school work she had to complete was mind boggling. But she did it, she had the brains and drive. Most people, no matter how bad they tried to accomplish the same goal, would not have the intelligence and high aptitude to do so. So, many people can not be anything they want.

I believe you are talking about ignorance, not stupidity. And your employee had the drive, I used the word persistence, do accomplish what she did. Same drive made her prepare for LSAT's, graduate high school, work for you when others in law school might not because they believed it impossible to do both. I don't think I know all. But thinking in terms of "absolutes" fucked me by doing so in my life. I am certain someone who grew up in poverty in the middle of NYC believes absolutely they will never be more. I am just saying it is that thinking that is holding them back. Ron Howard spent his Happy Days money to pay for a film to star in and another to direct and he said he has been buying his success ever since. That was an important interview for me to hear. Nothing fell in his lap. He didn't do what most other childhood stars do and waste their money. He made his success and so can almost anyone else.

No, I am talking about stupidity, for lack of a better word. I am stupid when it comes to learning A very high level of mathematics. I could not be an engineer and work for NASA. I could not be a physicist. My brain does not function or have the aptitude for those fields. Financial and business math is in my reach, but not much more. We all have limitations, some more than others. No matter how bad I wanted to be an engineer and design Lear jets, it simply would be a goal out of my reach. Some people are just dumb. Dumb when it comes to book smarts and common sense. It's just the way it is.

And others are book smart but dumb in the real world. Take my stepson who gets great grades. His vehicle inspection is months overdue, he's already gotten a $130 ticket for it. He has a job, but spends the money on a $300 car stereo instead of the parts it needs to pass inspection. He got a letter in the mail the other day saying that his license is suspended due to not paying the ticket on time. He waited until the very last possible day, which resulted in a $20 additional fee, then paid it online. But it didn't post until two days later, you know how online payments are... So he got all mopey and FINALLY got a little worried about it. Then they sent another letter saying that it was indeed paid on time so the penalty was lifted. Now he is back to not worrying about getting it inspected. If he gets stopped again the ticket will be much higher and he will lose his license immediately. But, he took the whole week off from work to hang out with his girlfriend due to a 'pulled hamstring', yet went to soccer tryouts every day, twice a day. Ok, I'm done ranting. Call it youth if you want, but people are all kinds of stupid.
