As he prepares to marry his longtime partner, David Furnish, Sir Elton John spoke on the controversial issue of same-sex marriage. In a new interview, he described the Church of England’s refusal to let their gay clergy marry as “old and stupid,” while saying that Jesus Christ would have no problem with it.
“If Jesus Christ was alive today,” he told Sky. “I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that’s what the church should be about.”
John and Furnish, who have been together since 1994, had a civil union on Dec. 21, 2005, the first day such ceremonies were allowed to be performed in England. And although same-sex marriages have been performed in England since March, John’s touring schedule does not seem to provide enough time at the moment for he and Furnish to officially tie the knot.
“I don’t think we can get married until next year,” he added. “However, when we do do, it will be very quiet and off the cuff – we had our big shebang when we had our civil union.”
John says he plans to speak about gay rights with Russian President Vladimir Putin when the two meet in November, although he admits, “I don’t know what good it will do, though.”

I'm actually a bit surprised that Elton and David are getting married as Elton has not been in favor of gay marriage in the past. He has been quoted as saying he sees more sense in domestic partnerships. Good for him though. His quiet off the cuff is probably a normal couples big to do.
Speaking of which though Jason and I have set a date now and I've been busy trying to nail things down such as venue, food, guest list, budget etc. one of the reasons I haven't been posting much as I have too much going on.

Changed his tune a bit: I agree with the writer that it seems to be semantics. www.celebitchy.com/21719/elton_john_is_against_gay_marriage_says_civil_unions_are_for_same_sex_couples/Elton John is against gay marriage, says civil unions are for same sex couples November 13, 2008 By Celebitchy Elton John, Gay Issues Elton John has made an argument that sounds like it’s about semantics but is more about basic rights. The 61 year-old pop star has been in a civil partnership with his same sex partner, David Furnish, since 2005. They threw a huge reception for the event with many celebrity guests at an estimated cost of £ 1 million. Elton says a civil union is all that same sex couples need and that they should confuse the issue by asking for full marriage rights like opposite sex couples: Elton John says the reason Prop. 8 in California passed, banning gay marriages, is because of one word — marriage. “I don’t want to be married,” he told USA TODAY’s Donna Freydkin at a New York fundraiser last night. “I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership,” said John. “The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.” Of his partner David Furnish, he says, “We’re not married. Let’s get that right. We have a civil partnership. What is wrong with Proposition 8 is that they went for marriage. Marriage is going to put a lot of people off, the word marriage.” [From Blogs.usatoday.com via Showhype] Marriage may just be a word, but it also involves a whole set of rights and allowances not afforded in a civil union in the US, particularly recognition by the federal government. Activists say that civil unions are a kind of “separate but unequal” partnership for same sex couples and that they still face countless legal and monetary issues that don’t affect married couples. Elton John doesn’t care about any of that stuff, though, he’s richer than some countries and doesn’t have to worry if his partner will get insurance money or his government pension if he dies or becomes disabled. He thinks that all the other gay couples be satisfied with a tenuous legal status too. Maybe he’s secretly worried that his assets won’t be protected if he ends up getting married.

Yes, Jesus would have been in favor! It drives me nuts when "Conservative Republican" people try to hijack Jesus and turn him into their own little mascot, even though Jesus gave no indication that he'd ever support any sort of Conservative/Republican ideologies. A thorough read-through of the Gospels will reveal that Jesus was a far-left Socialist who was open and accepting towards all sorts of people (he was PARTICULARLY accepting of those who were marginalized by everyone else.) Jesus didn't actually express an opinion on homosexuality, but Jesus-as-described-in-the-Gospels would've had no problem with it.
As for the whole idea that "Christianity and the Bible show that homosexuality is a sin," evidence for that is scant. I realize that there are people in the world who enjoy cherrypicking scripture to justify their own personal bigotry (the Bible has been used to justify slavery, witch-burnings, racial segregation, and all manner of evil). But it's a massive stretch to say that the Bible shows that homosexuality is sinful - you'd need to do a lot of cherrypicking, and a lot of 'creative apologetics' to find any such scripture. Reading the story of Sodom and Gomorrah or Leviticus or even Paul's letters in context will reveal that the whole idea of "The Bible says homosexuality is sinful" is essentially a gigantic load of baloney.
I thought Elton already had a kid with that guy? I think marriage is a whole lot more than a piece of paper, so I don't really agree with ELton's previous ideas --- whether he likes it or not, he's already involved in a huge commitment with his mate. My best friend Lizzie has two kids with someone who refuses to marry her because he "doesn't believe in....pieces of paper." There's a certain significance to standing up in public in front of all your family and friends and vowing to be loyal to each other forever, til death do you part. If it were really "just a piece of paper," Lizzie's boyfriend would go along and just do it to humor her but marriage frightens him because of course it's much, much more than a piece of paper. Most people who oppose marriage "because it's only a piece of paper" do so because they know very well that it's much more than a piece of paper - it's a massive public commitment that opens your relationship to a certain level of public accountability. Homosexuals are fighting for much more than "a slip of paper!!" They're fighting for the right to make that ultimate public commitment!! They're fighting for the right to stand up in front of their entire community and take those public vows! The whole "it's just a piece of paper" argument is such a lame excuse for not marrying someone. If it's "just a piece of paper," then why not just go ahead and get the piece of paper? What's to fear? What's to lose?
OMG!!!! JEFF, I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE ENGAGED!!!!!!!! How did I miss that? Have you two been engaged all along and biding your time for marriage, or did one of you recently pop the question? CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations Jeff and Jason!
My daughters best friend and her partner are having there official engagement party in August and are hoping for a wedding around Valentines day next year. The legislation still hasn't been passed here yet and with this new government ( the Prime Minister is anti gay and even brought out the old Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve gem in the media) I'm not sure it will be even though rumour has it that it will be done by early February. That is what they said last year and then again this year, so maybe 3rd time lucky.
My daughter (the I'm never getting married or ever having kids one) has also just recently got engaged and the kid she was never going to have will be a flower girl LOL.

And here I thought it was because anaix3l was kicking your bone to bone ass. Congrats on the date! Nah, although I did step out of that game. After the riffs one I needed a break. That was an exhausting battle lol thanks everyone! We got engaged last year but made no plans until Pennsylvania gave us the right. We (meaning I while Jason mutters "I don't know" and "why can't we just go to a JP why does it have to be a big deal") have just started planning.
