Aerosmith’s Tom Hamilton on band’s future: ‘We can do whatever we want whenever we want’August 11, 2014 by Juanski DETROIT, MI — Aerosmith is a 45-year-old rock band that doesn’t appear to be calling it quits anytime soon and has a curious eye toward the future. Tom Hamilton, the band’s bassist, told MLive on Monday that he thinks part of its plans will eventually include a new album — whether a record company gets behind it or not. “Yeah, I don’t know,” said Hamilton, when asked of the potential album’s specific format it could be released in. “That’s something we’re going to come up against when it’s time to put another record together. “We don’t have a record company right now; we can do whatever we want whenever we want.” Hamilton said Aerosmith has received offers from record companies to put together new music, but doesn’t feel it is in a rush to respond to any of them.“We’re just absolutely not in any hurry to sign anything or get anything nailed down,” Hamilton said. “It’s going to be a wait-and-see (situation) for sure.” Hamilton said the band, currently touring with Slash this summer, should have plenty of material to choose from if they pull the trigger on a new project. Aerosmith’s tour with Slash, called the Let Rock Rule Tour, makes a Sept. 9 stop at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston. For more information, visit the venue’s website. “I have music that I’d like to throw in,” Hamilton said. “And hopefully everybody else has some ideas.”Hamilton prefers an “organic” approach for a new album. He doesn’t want it to be a pain to produce and require a “really super-hard process that takes forever.” “It really shouldn’t, you know?,” Hamilton said. “You have a song, most of the lyrics ready, and you just go cut it as opposed to a lot of writing in the studio, a lot of sitting around using Pro Tools editing, all the different parts and the over-dubbing and stuff. I caught up with Hamilton for an in-depth interview over the phone that hits a variety of topics including the band’s love for Detroit, its experience touring with Slash, the impact it has had on pop culture and more. Check MLive.com on Tuesday afternoon for the complete interview. michigan.icito.com/aerosmiths-tom-hamilton-on-bands-future-we-can-do-whatever-we-want-whenever-we-want/

WRONG. Like Brad said, they need to throw away all of the ideas and start fresh.

WRONG. Like Brad said, they need to throw away all of the ideas and start fresh. That process will not get music anyone here wants to hear.

Start fresh with what? c'mon they're grandpas! They need to re-work some riffs and some melodies or some ideas for the lyrics with the help of one or two extra producers/writers but I wouldn't choose the same old people as I said in the other thread. I think they all can have some new musical ideas butI think it's very hard for them to create a full album from nowhere.

All 5 guys just need to walk into the studio and they can take it from there. Just like they did it in the 70s.

I'd like to see them go in with just the 5 guys, no outside writers and jam until something sounds cool to them. They have the momentum and energy right now from touring. Even if they just get 2 or 3 songs, screw it and just release them online.

Aerosmith is a rock band so there's big potential in selling a physical album to people between 30-60 who listen to rock music, they just need a good approach. As for outside writers I think that at this point they could be crucial since Steven and Joe don't seem to be so much creative lyrics-wise...they just need to work with good songwriters and have that little extra kick that can generate a good song from a simple idea. Musically I don't think they need someone to bring up melodies and structures as they're great musician with experience and lots of unused music ideas in their pokets but a general supervisor who gives them advice on the sound, the production and technical things is essential as well otherwise they'll start bitching around as usual...they're 5 people after all..it's human. I don't thinkt they can make an album by just walking all together in a studio, but hey that's a good starting point! I just hope Joe won't be too busy with his book and solo album which I think is totally useless and unecessary at this moment of his career. As for Steven's solo album....I really hope it's partially already done...after all these years I bet he ahs already recordered some songs but I don't know!

Sorry pillis, but recording a full album and using outside writers is exactly what they just did, and it was a major failure. Not because of marketing, but because of outside writers and spreading themselves too thin trying to put out enough songs to please everyone.
Keep it lean and mean, full on Aerosmith without the hit makers influence, put those songs out on Amazon and if the songs are good, they will sell. The days of selling albums are long gone for Aerosmith.
Unless they make some major changes, that is.

Actually, I think it's the other way around. I think Joe said recently he's already recorded half and has the rest planned out. It's Steven who I'm not sure has done anything. I'm not likely to buy whatever Steven comes up with but I wish he'd hurry up and get it over with so he can concentrate on working with Aerosmith on some new tunes.

The days of selling albums are long gone for Aerosmith. Unless they make some major changes, that is. They've been co-writing since ages...even in the 70s I bet that they had some collaborator but it wasn't a time of copyright and credits freaks, so maybe some guy just popped in in the studio and gave them some lyrical advice, changed a verse a bit and that's it...and we don't know. If you look ad MFAD most of the songs have been co-written so I don't think they would be able to write 10-12 songs on their own now. I just wish they're gonna change collaborators as I guess they had their moments with frederiksen and diane warren...and even Jim Vallance and desmond child although their lyrics are usually good. They need someone who can re-create that magic and vibe that they had in the 70s without making a nostalgia album...I think they should aim at making an inspiring record which glorifies their legacy and their stamina in this business, Legendary Child is a great example of that. Steven has been through a lot in the past years on a personal level but none of that was present on MFAD so since he's a very sensitive person I'm hoping he's gonna sing some heartfelt and raw lyrics next time. That's why I was suggesting Linda Perry in the other thread as a co-writer/executive so she could work with Steven on an emotional level.

I think Aerosmith should hit the studio right after the tour and capitalize on the momentum of this tour. They are playing great, have really strong chemistry right now. I know that is very unlikely.
In regards to record companies, I agree with Tom. Lay low and wait. No matter when Aerosmith takes to the studio, they should record what they want without record company influence/pressure. Record first, and then shop it if they want. If not bites, they can release it online themselves. No more record companies screwing up this band!

Tyler doesn't want to make hard rock anymore. I know, it sucks but it's the truth. He wants hits and ballads/love songs. That's it. We will only see flashes & shadows of 70's Aerosmith on stage, not in the studio. Although, I did hear attempts at 70's Aerosmith on MFAD, but it was not authentic as I don't believe Tyler was into it as much as he was forced into it, kind of like he was forced into Bobo.
I picture both Perry & Tyler both listening to Slash's new record, Perry is thinking,"Man, I wish we could do something close to that, with our own grove and funk put on it", while Tyler is thinking, "Why is Slash wasting his time with all this hard rock noise, where are the hooks, harmonies & melodies? And where are the ballads, no fucking ballads?, what a waste of a record, I don't hear any radio hits on this record"

You're all so wrong about ST imo. He likes writing ballads but he's not the only one...Tom and even Joe both like soft stuff, Brad put down amazing solos for their ballads. Harmonies and melodies have always been the core of all Aerosmith's songs...go back and listen to other 70s bands, no one had those crazy hooks and vocals harmonies, they're great because of that. Labels are what made Aerosmith big in the first place, without them they would probably be all dead or forgotten. Then I agree, they need to release a more punchy record and I'm sure that without the pressure of a major they could be able to do that but at the same time I think they need some extra help to keep the process smooth and organic.

I agree with all of this. Tyler may have been the problem once, but they are all on the soft track now. Brad seems to be the last hold out, and I'll give Joe partial credit, because I don't think he's totally gone yet. I'd like nothing more than to be proven wrong, but the evidence is out there on the last few albums, and especially on MFAD. Labels are what made Aerosmith big in the first place, without them they would probably be all dead or forgotten. This is true, but that time is way past. We're in the new century and everyone knows who Aerosmith is. Now is the time to not let record companies ruin what time they have left.
