Aerosmith’s Joe Perry: Fans Don’t Want to Hear New MusicThursday, August 28th, 2014 by Music News Group Fans waiting on another Aerosmith record will have to keep waiting, according to guitarist Joe Perry. “With us being off the record label, we’re really not sure yet,” the guitarist tells Boston magazine. Furthermore, Perry suggests, recording new music may be futile. “When we go out there and play live, people don’t really want to hear a thing unless they know it. We’ve played a couple of songs off the new record and gotten some polite applause,” he says. “Before the tour and after the record came out, I tweeted, ‘What song off the new record would you like to hear?’ The first tweet I got back was, ‘It depends on what song you have to take out of the set.’” Perry says that feedback like that puts “things in perspective.” “I don’t know if it’s worth going in and sweating blood over a new record when we could be out on the road playing all these other songs that people want to hear,” he explains. He adds that he has spent the last three years finishing his soon-to-be-published memoir, Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith, and crafting a new solo record. “I mean, I really feel like [finishing] it now,” he says of the solo project. “I’ve got five or six things ready to go. The approach has just been different than the other ones I’ve done.” www.101gold.com/2014/08/28/aerosmiths-joe-perry-fans-dont-want-to-hear-new-music/

He's right in a way, but doesn't address the fact that most of their new songs in the last 15+ years didn't generate any radio interest, especially in the hard rock category. I'm sure if they could write a few hard rock "hits" or any type of hit and those got played on the radio, then fans would be willing to hear those songs, especially if they only replaced the Geffen era duds like Edge, Jaded etc. It's almost an impossible task at this point for a 40 year old band to generate any sustained momentum from a new record or song. I'm fine with them not recording new songs and look forward to seeing Joe on the road as I know we will get some deep cuts from the Aero catalog.
This reminds me of an idea I had regarding the band just touring and perhaps only releasing a few songs at a time. What if they did the "Back to The Future Tours"- For Example, they go on the road in 2016 and call it the "Get Your Wings Tour 2016". Rehearse seldom or never played songs, record the rehearsal sessions and release that on iTunes, "Set List Rehearsal Sessions- Get Your Wings 2016"- It's kinda like something old is new again. Plus, fans could get a glimpse of what to expect to hear. They could keep in the hits, but pack the set with some special gems. Something like this- and imagine getting to hear these in a recorded live version from the set list sessions. The next tour could be the Rocks tour or "Aerosmith" tour. Just a thought and the band likes to be the first at things.

I guess it really depends on how he vs. the band defines NEW music. I'd take 1 song off of Dimension but I don't want 2-3 from it or any other new album.

Part of the problem is the method in which they are releasing music isn't the right way to go these days. Alternative/New Rock/Emerging Rock stations will not play them because they are dinosaurs. Classic Rock stations will not play the new stuff, because it is not "Consultant tested" and the stations that do play they new songs, get little interest because well... they don't play enough of the new songs in rotation to get it to stick - because well everyone wants to hear Walk This Way for the 100,000,000,000th time. FM Radio and the distribution of new music through it is dead.
Which leaves us to the interwebs... Having them record 2-3 new songs and make them damn good, putting them out on iTunes, social media, and etc will garner interest. Let's face it, the kids today don't want to hear Aerosmith, Van Halen, GnR, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Days of the New, Foo Fighters, or any bands before 2000... They want whats now, and Aerosmith isn't "now". Rather getting back to what made them big and supporting that fan base is key to getting new music out and the fans excited. This is the way to introduce new music to the people who are actually buying the tickets to these shows.

If it's songs like Street Jesus, I absolutely want to hear them live. It's a shame we weren't given that opportunity.
I would also be happy if they kept Oh Yeah in the set for the next few years, because I love that song. I know I'm pretty much alone in that, though.
Most everything else from MFAD, though, I wouldnt be doing cartwheels for and certain songs (most of the ballads and Joe's songs) would be bathroom/beer break time.
I guess my opnion is that if it's a good song, I absolutely want to hear it live. If it's not, I would rather they keep it on the bench. It's all so subjective though depending on the person.....my guess is that MOST here would like to hear Street Jesus, right? If not, then I'd say Joe's cynical, jaded assumption is correct.

When PV and Pump were released, even GAG, the band played many songs from the "new" albums, and the fans ate it up. The fans didn't like JPP or MFAD, so had little interest in hearing the songs. Rush played nearly the whole Clockwork Angels album to great reception because the songs were strong. Write a strong album and the fans will want to hear it.
All that being said, it seems true that many younger music fans are not interested in classic rock, so they swing with the tide. If Aerosmith hand't effectively alienated many of their long time fans with JJP and MFAD, Joe might have received a different response regarding what fans want to hear.

They did 20 to 30 seconds of Street Jesus last year (1st May 2013) and then segued into an old song, Steven had asked "what do you guys want to hear, the old shit or the new shit"? No-one yelled out old or new, they just stood there, my guess was 22 and 1/2 years between tours, play whatever you want, except for his new Idol fans that just screamed and screeched the whole show.
