I had the honor of meeting Mr. Joe Perry today at his LA book signing. It was at a 3 story Barnes and Noble store. The signing was scheduled for 7pm and the website said that you can get wristbands for the event as early as 9am. I ended up just coming from my college straight to this store and after traffic was there at 5:45. I bought the book and was surprised it was only 19.99 and they gave me a wristband and told me to come back at 6 (which was literally just 15 minutes away).
On the second floor you just had lots of Aerosmith fans wandering around aimlessly, as there didn't seem to be any line or employees organizing things. Security guards were all over the place and kept searching around constantly and gave lots of people dirty stares. We just naturally made our own line dictated by the letters on our wristbands, and finally at 6:30 they had an employee organize the line.
Now, I know this is a book signing. However, I had the Rocks album (CD) in my car and thought "what the hell, why not just bring it?", and had that in my pocket. Later on I saw people with video games, vinyl, and even a guitar. An employee informed us that Joe would be signing anything people wanted and would also be taking photos with everyone.
Talked to some cool fans, most of which were probably 20-30 years older than me. I ended up waiting till about 815 to finally meet Joe. How the pictures work is you hand your camera phone off to an employee who takes the photo for you. My camera decided to run out of battery literally 30 seconds before I met Joe and I had even handed it to the employee just as it ran out. So unfortunately I did not get a picture with Joe.
The employee handed me back my phone and as I looked up another employee gave me back both my rocks album and book, signed by Joe. Joe was already about to move on to the next person and I realized never even talked to him. I walked up to him and said "Thank You so much Joe" (kind of lame but I didn't know what else to say), and he said "Sure. Thank you for coming". He said it sincerely too. A really sweet guy and it was awesome that he took the time to get a silver marker out to sign the Rocks album.
Joe seemed happy to be there and meet his fans. While a quick signing is nothing like actually meeting someone, I still find it great that Joe was willing to take time out of his day to provide his fans with a free event like this. This book must mean a lot to him and I look forward to reading it.
While I am sad that I didn't get a picture, I am still amazed that I got my copy of the Rocks album signed by Joe f'n Perry. How cool is that?
