Steven said s few years ago that individually the five guy are pretty good. But put em all together and nobody is better. I would agree...certainly when playing at their peak.

Loved this comment from "Vinyl_Blues"
"No, I love Joe Perry's guitar playing. What really amazes me, though is how underrated Brad Whitford is, seeing as how I often have trouble differentiating him from Joe on record. But every time I've seen Joe Perry live he's impressed the hell out of me.
It's bizarre to call Joe Perry overrated when he rarely makes a Top 20 list of greatest guitarists.. Nonetheless, he's a superb musician that plays more for the song than for flash, which may be one reason he doesn't get noticed as much as his contemporaries.
In Aerosmith's heyday, he contributed greatly to the band's dirty, bluesy guitar playing that me, for me, is the essence of what rock and roll should be. Check out the mean, fuzzy guitar tone he creates on the opening of "Adam's Apple." He may not solo like Hendrix or Page, but he's a damn good rock guitarist who, if anything, is underrated, not overrated."

Wagner/Hunter didn't play all the leads on GYW.. From what I have heard they played the leads on Train and amybe a little on SOSAD...
People make a huge deal about that but this was common practice back then. ALOT of producers would pull in guitarists to play some licks on big albums by big bands and they were almost never credited. Jimmy Page did a good ammount od this.

I love Aerosmith but I really don't think any of them are great on their own. I never really considered them great musicians to be honest. I guess out of all of them, Steven may be the best at his craft.. Joe and Brad never come up in my favorite guitarist discussions. They don't really have truly distinctive sounds. My top 3 are Tomy Iommi Slash Gary Clark Jr Same for Tom Then there is Joey... I'd say from PUMP on I don't even like his drumming for the most part and it often doesn't mesh well with the vibe of the songs. This was also present on one of the Classics Live albums when it seemed he was trying to sound like Rick Allen from Def Leppard. All that being said, put them together and they are arguably the greatest American Rock N' Roll band of all time.. Funny how that works..

I quite enjoyed the Metal Wraps show. Thought the hosts did a nice job of dissecting some of the issues of modern music. And I agree, the new Ace Frehley record is quite good, and his playing is great.

All that being said, put them together and they are arguably the greatest American Rock N' Roll band of all time.. Funny how that works.. I think it boils down to the guys in Aerosmith having "IT" when they're together. Much like sports teams that go on winning streaks or even championship runs most don't have great individual talent but put together they have IT. You can't put a finger on what IT is because it's different for each circumstance but in many cases there's usually one person in the group that is above and beyond the rest of the group that can stand on their own but is even better as part of the group. Steven is a perfect example, he's good on his own, as a part of Aerosmith he's great compare that to Peyton Manning, he's very good on his own but surround him with enough guys that can do their jobs to "good" level and they're a championship level team. In my opinion Aerosmith works because they're so great live, I've taken people to shows that weren't necessarily fans of Aerosmith that have walked away talking more about the show than I would. There's just something about their chemistry that works and wouldn't work in any other format. It's pretty cool to see because it's pretty hard to find these days in music.
