Most populous cities in the world from 1500 to 2018 - animated bar chartSome cities already had over 500k people living in them by 1500. I thought it was interesting to see how the rise/ decline correlates with events of the time. Istanbul was the first city to get to 750k in the 1690s (this was during a war with the Habsburg Empire, which the Ottoman Empire officially lost in 1699). It started quickly dropping afterwards, though still remaining the largest city in Europe for another century until it was surpassed by London. Beijing was the first city in the world to surpass 1 million in the 1770s. This was during what's considered to be the peak of the Qing dynasty. The London population numbers went up like crazy in the 1st half of the 1800s and it was the first city to get to 2 millions in the 1840s. Industrial revolution plus people fleeing from the continent during the Napoleonic wars, I guess. It was also the first city to get to to 3 millions in the 1850s, 4 millions in the 1870s, 5 millions in the 1880s, 6 millions in the 1890s, 7 millions by 1910... this already sounds like an orgy! 1 million in a little over a decade is impressive for the 19th century. New York was the first city to get to 8 millions in the 1920s and to 9 and then 10 millions in the 1930s as WWII was starting. It was also the first city to get to 11 and 12 millions. Then Tokyo was the first city to get to 13 millions and to every other significant figure to date. Which looks a bit like everyone fucking everyone. The population increase has slowed down in recent years, but it's still approaching 40 millions. A lot of other cities have had a dramatic increase over the past 50 years. Delhi is currently in second place with 27 millions and, only 25 years ago, it wasn't even in the top 10! Current top 5 only includes cities in Asia. There is no European city in the top 10 anymore.

For a moment, I almost thought the 2nd guy was Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute).

Girl covers Death Angel on piano. The band sees it and she eventually ends up playing piano on an album.
Very cool. A fan's dream, I guess!
