Yeah, seriously, Robin Williams really isn't that funny, yet everyone holds him up as this "all-time great comedian" and I don't even get it. Has he ever actually done anything funny?
My favorite comedy is British comedy -- Great Britain has made the greatest contributions to comedy in all of Western Civilization! I love legendary British comedians like Eddie Izzard and Rowan Atkinson, and I love stuff like Blackadder and Keeping Up Appearances and Fawlty Towers and the Royle Family.
Of course, MONTY PYTHON. I definitely think "The Life of Brian" is one of the funniest movies ever made -- totally sacreligious, but incredibly funny. Monty Python's flying Circus was the best sketch-comedy show ever, and the Monty Python guys were a bunch of comedic geniuses. I was recently watching John Cleese's old Hewlett-Packard commercials from the 1980s and he's basically a genius of a comedian.
I think I like British comedy because I grew up in a microcosm of British-American culture, and it's all just like my parents' senses of humor.
But one show I've never really liked was Absolutely Fabulous. I guess it has its funny moments, but it's not as "ROTFLMAO" as so many other British sitcoms.

My current favorite is Kathleen Madigan. She had two specials on Netflix. I recommend checking her out.

I agree on John Cleese and Monty Python/Fawlty Towers. The stuff is absolutely brilliant. The Ministry of Silly Walks, I Don't Like Spam, etc, etc..
Also love old Bill Cosby stand up, and Richard Pryor would have me in tears.
This one is a favorite:

My favorite comedian is Norm MacDonald. I wouldn't say he has the best stand up routine, but his unique delivery, unpredictable behavior and comedic wit makes him very entertaining to watch in different skits, interviews or TV spots.

If you haven't listened to Adam Sandler's CD's, it is some of the funniest, raunchiest shit you will ever hear.. Far cry from the lame movies he does now. Although, his latest movie "That's My Boy" is f'n hillarious.. Maybe his best movie ever, above Happy Gilmore and Billy Maddison....

I think Dave Chapelle is a genius. To bad he retired a long time ago.

aaeerroo if you like Brit comedy, below are a few names for you to check out, John Cleese and other members of Monty Python have cited these early guys as there inspiration and so has Rowan Atkinson.
Benny Hill, Dick Emery and Dave Allan.
'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' from 'Life Of Brian' is one of my faves.
I don't really like Rowan Atkinson in Black Adder or Mr Bean but my hubby is a huge fan so we have it all on video and now most of it on dvd. If you ever saw the tv show 'House' starring Hugh Laurie, you would have seen him in Black Adder. He went to university with Rowan Atkinson and also had his own tv show called Fry and Laurie around the same time as Black Adder started. Hale and Pace are another brit duo that were pretty good.
Coop mentioned Richard Pryor, I like his stand up (live and smokin') and most of his movies too. I have no idea where I got it but I have Richard Pryor "live and smokin'" and Cheech and Chong "Big Bamboo" (them actually doing it live on stage) on video.
I am looking for some aussie comedians you might like, they are a bit raw though, even the C-word is common here, even on tv after 7.30pm.

Dave Allen, Benny Hill that's kickin it old school. I haven't seen a Dave Allen bit in probably over 30 years. What Memories. Two of the all time greats if not the greatest: George Carlin Lenny Bruce

I forgot about Lenny Bruce, he was hilarious.

WARNING >>>EXPLICIT CONTENT>>> DO NOT WATCH IF PROFANITY OFFENDS YOU!!! I'll understand if Coop or Tomass deletes the video's I am about to post. Here in Australia after 7.30pm you can swear on tv to a certain extent and after 9pm you can say pretty much what ever you want with virtually no censorship (racist comments not withstanding).. Below is one of my fave aussie music comedians (alot of his stuff is in the vein of Weird Al Yankovic but with lots of profanity, he calls it decomposing music). First one is actually an interview on a tv show that used to air 9pm...
Next is a partial of one his songs but not him doing it, it started when he was supposed to headline the Toronto Comedy Festival and was told to tone it down, he called it " You can't say c#@t in Canada"!

I forgot about Lenny Bruce, he was hilarious. The Dave Allen shows I saw were from sindication sometime in the early 1980's. I remember one episode where the video screen projection of him asks to tell a few jokes. So Dave hops out of the chair says hes going to make a phone call or something like that and the him on the video screen says "you know where he's going and makes the drinky drinky motion.
