Richards/Jones, Richard/Taylor. Richards/Wood???
Whitford/Perry?
NOPE!
Slash/Izzy
To me, those two guys assembled the greatest guitar duo friction on Appetite that I have ever heard in my life.. Deservedly so, Slash had always gotten the credit for his thick "Slithery" bluesy leads... But Izzy's dirty, raw rythyms were such a HUGE part of that Guns sound.. Listen to the Rythym of Out Ta Get Me... Izzy.... Rocket Queen, Izzy....
I love Guns.. LIES, UYI's, SI and all the bootlegs I have... In my life "Appetite" is the greatest album of all time, mainly due to the unmatchable chemistry of Slash and Izzy... Of course Axl get's just as much credit for being what he was at the time.. He was the fucking shit... Was... Now, he sounds and looks like a turd..
Slash has managed to continue kicking ass throughout the years, but I would kILL to see Slash and Izzy do something just one more time..
I gotta say, I have always loved Aerosmith but Guns were my biggest obsession and still would be if they never broke up.... \m/ They were that big..
Excuse my spelling... Jack Daniels Single Barrell....

Totally agree. Except I think Joe and Brad have a chemistry that is right up there with them and which likely highly influenced the chemistry and sound of Slash/Izzy and the classic GN'R. Appetite is a total eargasm, along with most UYI songs. Then again, so are most Aerosmith albums. And a lot of that has to do with that duel guitar interplay. I love it!
Also...I'm about 4 drinks in on tall Jack & Diets, but I think this reply is pretty coherent. Does that make me an alcoholic??

While I don't necessarily agree that they sound better than Perry/Whitford, they are definitely right up there with them.
I remember back in '87, the songs you heard daily on MTV were things like Livin' On a Prayer, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Alone (Heart), and Say You Will (Foreigner). Not bad songs I guess, but nothing to really grab you by the balls either. And these were the songs you heard if you were lucky. So one day I'm walking around my then 2nd floor apartment in Northbridge MA with MTV playing in the background when suddenly I hear that echoing opening guitar riff from Jungle - Da da da da da da da da da....Da da da da da da da da da, Axl says "Oh my - God!", the sirens start up, and the band starts to ramp up, Axl let's out a "Cha!" and all hell breaks loose!!...I'm like, "YES! YES!!! WTF is this!?!?" as I stop what I'm doing and drop down on the couch to watch with wide eyed wonder at the first really good song I've heard in quite some time. The song was full throttle kick ass and the gritty video matched it perfectly. By the end of that video I was a believer, no questions asked.
This pretty much sums up Appetite:

GLENN TIPTON AND KK DOWNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're like the defining "twin-axe attack", right down to the synchronized headbanging choreography. I like the way they have two really good lead guitarists. I like the sound of two lead guitars. I also like Smith/Murray from Iron Maiden, or any other setup where I can clearly hear two lead guitars. The "duelling leads" thing is a very nice sound.
The thing about Perry/Whitford is that they're like two halves of one really good guitarist. Neither of them would stand out on their own, but they balance each other's weaknesses. But Aerosmith is missing that "twin lead guitarist/duelling leads" thing that I enjoy so much. I kind of want to categorize Perry/Whitford as a single guitarist, and I want to categorize Aerosmith as a single-lead-guitar band with some incredibly iconic riffs. They do have very good chemistry, and they do play off each other very well, but I can't listen to an Aerosmith song and say "Oh, yup, there's Brad Whitford;...and now, Joe Perry comes on....and here's Brad again, and now, this is clearly Joe."
What I like about Tipton/Downing is how they're both totally obvious, and you always know which one is playing any given guitar part -- not only because one is always on the left and the other is always on the right, but also because they have distinctive styles that you can pick out in the music. It's also very nice when they both play the same part in unison. Downing is rather loose and sloppy and heavy with the whammy bar, whereas Tipton is tighter and clearer and more melodic. Tipton is the one who gets most of the good solos, but I do like the way Tipton's piercing solos are complemented by Downing's roughness. I like it better than Whitford's technical prowess + Perry's roughness because I can't shut my eyes and mentally envision Brad Whitford's guitar sound or Joe Perry's guitar sound.
I think it's actually really bizarre that Tipton/Downing aren't together right now, because I always imagine them walking around together like twins and speaking in unison, and wearing matching outfits.
I wonder how much effort it actually took them to iron out their stage choreography. I know Joe Perry has admitted to standing in front of a mirror and practicing his Keith Richards routine for hours on end. I find it somewhat-hilariously-disturbing to imagine Downing and Tipton standing in front of a large mirror for hours and going "And now on this next beat, we will both headbang to the left," but they probably did do that for many, many years.

Brian Robertson & Scott Gorham with Thin Lizzy
Brad Gillis an Jeff Watson with NIght Ranger
Brian May, Brian May, and Brian May with Queen during his live three part harmony guitar solo (okay, that is cheating, but still a Wow factor for me).
