David Lee Roth no doubt! First of all, DLR is an incredibly talented frontman. At his peak, he was better than Steven Tyler. Also, this was Van Halen's "rocking-est" period, even though nobody in the band was particularly skilled at writing songs.
Then, Sammy Hagar comes in -- and Sammy Hagar is actually fairly skilled at songwriting, and it's amazing how dramatically Van Halen's songwriting improves during the Van Hagar years. But, Van Hagar is also characterized by a lot of really cheesy, soft, radio-friendly ballads such as "Love Walks In" and "Why Can't This Be Love?" and "Love" this, and "Love that," so I definitely can't say Sammy Hagar rocked anywhere near as much as David Lee Roth did, although he was a better songwriter and a very respectable rocker prior to his tenure in Van Halen.
Gary Cherone---meh. I don't even know what they did with Gary Cherone, but Gary Cherone has never rocked. This was not a high point in Van Halen's career.
I just want to share this great DLR interview with you folks. One of the things I find most endearing about David Lee Roth is the way he always seemed to be "in on the joke" and aware of the absurdity of being a rock star.

Pretty much agree with aaeerroo's assessment. DLR was a good front man, but boy, he could never sing. I still love both the DLR and Sammy eras of Van Halen. I actually like Gary in Extreme, and thought this would be a good pairing, but it just didn't work. Gary's voice seemed so strained on the 3 album. A few decent songs I enjoy (Dirty Water Dog and Fire in the Whole), but on the whole it didn't work.

All the rawness was lost when Roth left. Although you could argue legitimately that that began with 1984. Sammy has a great vocal range unfortunately that was used to create mostly over polished nonsense although I do enjoy Black and Blue quite a bit. Gary Cherone reeks of over polished nonsense.
