In one thread we were talking about music we've never listened to because of our preconceived notions.
In another thread, we were talking about how Cinderella's always been classified as a "hair-metal-band" even though they really produced some pretty great rock music.
I tend to avoid listening to "hair bands" because I have many preconceived notions about "hair bands," and I always automatically assume that the music will suck simply because an artist has been classified as "a hair band."
However, I'm sure Cinderella isn't the only "hair band" out there with decent hard-rock creds. I'm sure I've written off a number of good bands without even giving them a fair shake simply because they had a certain label pinned to them.
What are some other bands who've unjustly been pinned with that "hair-band" label?
***********
For my part, I think Def Leppard deserves that "hair-band" label from around "Pyromania" onwards. Early in their career, they were classified amongst the "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal," and their first two records are pretty NWOBM-fabulous.

Actually, Aerosmith was labeled as a hair band by some during the late 80s. I definitely think that was a misconception based on the time period and the look of the time.

I too, often dismiss "hair bands." Always felt they had a look and sound , but no real talent for song writing or playing. I can list a few MTV favorites that really turned me off, but really no point.
I do think Dokken was misclassified as a hair band--Of course the back of Under Lock and Key didn't help. However, I thought they had a sound that was more their own and Lynch was terrific. I even liked Don's vocals. After Back for the Attack their egos seemed to kill what chemistry and artistry they had as a band. Too bad.

Cinderella - that pretty much is all.
Def Leppard - didn't start out as one but became one. After the horrific Hysteria there was no turning back. Dokken probably didn't start as one but certainly became one.
I hate most hair bands. Bad drummers, no rawness, way too much finger tapping nonsense, wimpy rhythm guitars yuck.

I don't personally agree with some of these but there was an article here (Oz) mentioning more than a few famous bands of the time. It was titled "What Would They Talk About When Left Alone Backstage"? According to the author of the article it was hair treatments, dyes, perms etc!
Aerosmith was in there and in no other particular order (other than those who come to mind), Def Leppard ( I actually liked Hysteria, Rick's first album after he lost his arm), Poison, Warrant, G'n'R's, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, there were quite a few others that I can't think of at the moment.

In addition to Cinderella, I would also say Motley Crue and Ratt. They were both harder bands that came on the scene earlier. Also, I don't recall Ratt having a hit power ballad.
Motley Crue did wear a lot of makeup though and had more ballads later on (some were good, but "Without You" was kinda cheesy)

I never fully understood the term hair band. They had crazy feathered hair so their music sucked? It's almost like the glam rock label from the 70s. During those days I was still a kid so I wasn't really buying music so I would go by what I heard on the radio and if I liked the song I didn't care what they were labeled. If it was a catchy tune, I liked it.

Personally, I like hair bands. They are high energy and usually a lot of fun to listen to. And even though that style of guitar playing isn't mine, I still wish I could play half as good as some of those guys, such as C.C. DeVille.

There were alot of different kinds of bands that got lumped into the term "hair bands".. Some were good and some were awful...
I don't know if these were unjustly labeled as hair bands because they looked the part but I always these bands had substance.
Cinderalla - They definately started out looking like a hair band. Their first album was 80's hard rock and really good. Then they progressively got more bluesy with each album they realeased after that.
Skid Row - Their first album was more 80's sounding but good. There were always a grittier, heavier rock band.
Faster Pussycat - A Sunset Strip Hair band with Aerosmith's influence stamped all over them. They were definately a hair band but more Sleezy like Guns and Aerosmith.
I love Motley Crue, but I would definately say they were a hair band.
