Office Depot said Monday that it will close at least 400 U.S. stores as part of it's consolidation plans following the company's merger with OfficeMax.
I never understood how these two companies, and Staples, competed. Especially the two "Office" ones. I honestly never knew which on I was in or did I care. Surprised they didn't merge years ago.

So I wonder are the stores actually closing, or just rebranding themselves? It sucks to hear about mass firings due to this kind of crap.
Of course, I do most of my shopping online, so I guess I contribute to the problem in that way.

I think they are like Walgreens and CVS. Literally if one is on the corner, the other is on the one across the street. So I imagine.........and would know if I had read further.....they are just closing up duplicates. Yep, your the problem. And me and them and.....
Maybe it was just me cause most businesses are quite similar to the competition. But I couldn't even distinguish between the two and I spent a lot of time in both. Then you have the name similarity.

Office Max is headquartered in my local area (far west suburbs of Chicago) and since they are consolidating their corporate offices into Office Depot's home of South Florida, that will impact the economy around here. The Chicago metropolitan area has such a diverse, dynamic economy with many different companies, so in the grand scheme of things, it probably won't be that bad, but it's still a negative impact nonetheless. Me, personally, I've always preferred Office Depot anyways. Some of the newer Office Maxes are nice, but a lot of them seem to be older and inferior to the Office Depot locations. I've never liked Staples. I feel like they were late arrivals to the Chicago area, and I just never got used to them.
Regardless, I don't know how much it will matter to me in the future anyways since I've gone to office supply stores less and less with each passing year (especially now that I'm done with school), while the price of office supplies has risen exponentially over the years. I do have to say that when I do buy certain office supplies, I prefer going to an office supply store (over a Walmart or Target) since they tend to have a better selection of items to choose from.
