people.com/music/jeff-beck-dead-age-78-bacterial-meningitis/Jeff Beck, the beloved guitar player who rose to fame with English rock band The Yardbirds, has died at 78. His family confirmed Beck's death in a statement on Wednesday. "On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's Passing," the statement began. "After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss." Beck rose to fame in 1965 when he took over as guitarist for The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton. The next year, he founded his own group, The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. They released two albums together: Truth and Beck-Ola.

This certainly isn't one I would've predicted. He always looked pretty healthy.
Sad loss. Amazing player.

We had tickets to go see him in October but so many shows that month so we sold them knowing we very well might be missing our last opportunity. I am blessed to have seen him many times and took my son often too. When my son was young he loved the Beatles because we were bringing him up the right way, starting with the basics. We took him to a lot of shows and he cried when we told him that we could never see the Beatles live as John Lennon had already passed. We took him to see Jeff Beck and the look of awe on his face listening to Jeff play A Day in the Life is a precious memory. Away at school, he is the one that texted us first to give us the news.
Also recall that when People Get Ready came out I had tix for what I believe was the 2nd night of the tour...at Mesa Amphitheater. Jeff and Rod. Jeff quit after the first night in CA so I sold my tix in the amphitheater parking lot. Sometimes I wondered if I should have gone regardless. 2nd row Rod close to his prime years. Today I care a little less about missing Rod and am just glad to have experienced Jeff's shows when I did.

RIP. Phenomenal player. Didn't Aerosmith used to cover 'Happenings Ten Years Time Ago' in their very early days? I'd love to hear that.

Phenomenal player. Amazing phrasing and always knew where to land. So often I would hear the start of a phrase and assume it would go one direction, and Jeff would take it elsewhere and it was perfect. On the guitar, he always meant what he said , and everything he said meant something. Never saw him live, but man did I where out some grooves on vinyl.
