I am certain I once read an interview with Jack Douglas where he said it was only because Aerosmith had to go out on tour and the album wasn't finished yet. I doubt it was down to their capabilities. I prefer the rougher sounding solos from Joe on live recordings of 'Train....' at the time anyhow.

I had read this a couple of years ago. I can’t remember the source, but it did make hear Train differently.
There is a discussion on this Guitar World article on Reddit. Apparently Brad thinks they also used these session guys on SOS (Too Bad). Speculation that this was also the case for Sane Old Song and Dance. Hope none of that is true

According to Wikipedia, DW also played on SOSAD and SH also played on LOTT and SOS.

I read a quote by Dick Wagner saying that Joe was not an established player yet, and Jack Douglas felt that album had a chance to propel the band into the limelight. It had to be good. Incidentally Wagner was involved in my favorite obscure band Ursa Major.
