So, I'm sure we all know that Aerosmith appeared on SNL on February 17, 1990 during the promotion/tour for Pump and played Janie and then Monkey on My Back. It's been years since I've seen either performance, particularly Janie. I rewatched the Janie performance last night. I think it's the best live vocal performance of Janie that I've seen from Steven. If someone has a better one, feel free to post it so that I can check it out. I'm not surprised that it was a strong one, as Aerosmith and Steven were basically right in their 2nd prime/peak during this time period and SNL was a live tv show seen by millions, so the band and Steven had every incentive to give it everything they had and make it sound as good as it possibly could.
One other thing - I can tell from listening to the band that there was a track or tracks being used to help, which is understandable as Janie as strings and a lot of things going on musically. I hate to even ask this but, watching the video - how "live" was the rest of the band for this performance? It's Aerosmith so I would never expect them miming their instruments to backing tracks, as they just have no need to do so but there were times watching Joe that his playing just didn't seem in line with the acoustic sounds that I was hearing. It certainly isn't the album track of Janie that we are hearing, so, if they were using any type of track, it wasn't the album track but a more stripped down track. The guys are all professionals and have played Janie tons of times, so I wouldn't see any need for additional help, even on a tv show with a huge audience where there might be some pressure to put in a near-perfect performance. Do you think the rest of the guys were 100 percent live here? I almost didn't even want to ask but I thought I would throw it there just to see what others thought.
