hi guys,
just a little question here, I remember the MTV Icon thing coming out in 2002 It was a big deal for me and it was a big deal all around MTV they advertised the hell out of this
I actually used to watch MTV daily 1999-2002 because Aerosmith were all over it
but then, past the ICON show, I can't ever remember seeing Aerosmith on MTV ever again
I know MTV kinda reinvented themselves past 2004 and went into the reality shows, and all that ,but I really can't remember seeing Aerosmith on MTV ever again have you?
is it fair to say MTV ICON was some kind of an official love letter, a cute wrap up, and a farewell to the old era of what MTV really used to be? that the network already knew they are moving away from the old format and are moving into pastures new? is it fair to say Aerosmith witnessed the death of MTV, or was it more like Aerosmith stopped being relevant and weren't needed around MTV anymore?
or maybe, you kept watching and saw Aerosmith all over MTV post 2002 ?

The thing is, after ICON, they didn't release much stuff at all. The "Girls of Summer" video was on heavy rotation on MTV, and after that, "Baby, Please don't go", and then, they went silent for 8 years until the release of "Legendary Child". Sure, in those years MTV changed A LOT, but it's not like MTV stopped showing them, they stopped releasing videos.

yea I get where you are takin this but at the same time I'm askin a question - was the decision to stop makin videos down to the band ? I mean, Bobo had only one video, and what exactly stopped it from having 2 or 3 ? low budget? open the vaults and make live videos and when Aerosmith toured with Kiss, and then Motley, was it really a band decision not to promote Rockin the Join or Devils Gotta New Disguise or whatever it was with a live video? and how about the time when Aerosmith released their BEST greatest hits compilation EVER - the guitar hero game Guitar Hero was on FNK fire and Aerosmith took it on the road - did the greatest hits tour, invited gamers onto the stage to play guitar hero as their opening acts it seems it was only the label who dropped the ball and wouldn't release a video or "real live vs rendered computer graphics video" Imagine how Aerosmith did the RUN DMC vs Aerosmith breaking the wall clip, so imagine Aerosmith doingthat with the avatars on the other end of the wall kinda clip also, 2007, Aerosmith toured Europe for the first time in a while - still, label didn't lift a finger so that implies the band was active but the label wasn't. Does that mean the label didnt have the canvas to paint on, or does that mean the label dropped the ball?

yea I get where you are takin this but at the same time I'm askin a question - was the decision to stop makin videos down to the band ? I think so. The "girls of summer" video only had Steven in the video because the other 4 didn't like the song so they refused to appear and they used archive footage. Bobo had only 1 video, and also it was the only single. Devil's and Rockin' the Joint didn't even have videos or radio singles released. They were just put out there for the hardcore fans to buy and that's it. At least Devil's had 2 new songs, then we got "Tough Love" that didn't have any new songs... then they released MFAD with Legendary Child and WCHBL, but don't play it live. It was one wrong choice after another.

I dont think it was a deliverate desition from MTV to stop playing Aerosmith. While they didnt release much more after 2002 that was too popular or relevant for the changed MTV channel, indeed they had a lot of missed promotional oportunities, they could have done cheap montage video for any and all their newer stuff. To a degree I think the band didnt want to risk it too much with new music since they were enjoying so much making money from their legacy stuff...

the did play WCHBL twice, and Devils New Disguise maybe 10 times... still absolute shitshow of miss promotional oportunities...
I thing WCHBL was too high and risky for Steven to do live, and hence he choose to play "Oh Yeah" which was super confortable for him to sing, but its kind of a boring song that should have been a Joe solo B-side. Poor choice of singles to promote, no support from lable, and an older band wanting to do what "they" wanted, more than what the lable/management suggested - that's my best guess.

The "to be continued" at the end of Legendary Child still kills me...

I think that was just Patrick Tebo, the video director, wishing to direct a second video. Also, we will never know what was inside that box, but I think it would only make sense if it happened to be the MFAD album, right?
