Is anyone else into this great hobby? I have decided to put my spare room to use and get going on setting up a model train set. I only have room for the standard 4 x 8 foot table but from what I have been looking at you can get some pretty decent layouts with a 4 x 8. This is one I want to model mine after... I actually want to model my layout after Rigby Yard here in South Portland Maine. You should be able to see a birds eye view here... maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&q=Rigby+Yard&fb=1&gl=us&hq=rigby+yard+south+portland+maine&cid=18330862285984381329&ei=61iHU9PmMcrLsAT7ioK4Cg&ved=0CMMBEPwSMAsBut to start off with I will have 2 simple oval sets...one is a standard analog CSX HO scale set... www.csxstore.com/prod-Train_Set___HO_Scale-1053.aspxAnd the other I just bought is a DCC controlled Norfolk Southern set here... www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/931-892I wanted to get going into DCC since it's a lot more fun with authentic sounds and being able to control multiple engines. I can't wait to get up and running! From, what I have read about DCC I will have to study up and become a wiring and soldering genius. The great thing is I don't have to do everything at once. I can build a little bit at a time. Unfortunately I won't be able to post pics now thanks to Getty...but I should still be able to post the links to the pics!

Sounds like it could be fun. Never got into trains, but have done model cars and houses before. I'm pretty proud of the Psycho House I did a few years back. Came out nice. You'll have to post some vids when you have it going.

Sure thing! Of course! Videos would always be better than mere pictures!

I can't see the video at work, but some people have tracks that go on the walls so the trains ride all around you. That would be pretty cool to do. Not sure what they do about doors though.

This one is pretty awesome! He's actually cut tunnels out through the walls!
This one is nice too!

Friend and I had a 4x8 in my garage when we were in Jr High. We had a good time making tunnels and mountains out of chicken wire etc. then we burned out both controllers, and being young as we were simply moved on to other interests. It was a lot of fun, though.

It was a lot of fun, though. I had a pretty good layout when I was in elementary school. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of it when we moved into a smaller place. Now I finally have an extra room to get started back up again. I wish I had kept the stuff I had...probably would have been collectors items by now. But DCC is the thing now...stands for Digital Command and Control...I think I mentioned it in my OP...you can control multiple loco's and the sounds are more realistic. I just got my table set up last night and my first train set is supposed to be delivered today! For now it will just be a simple oval until I can get some more track and scenery to really get going.

I assume you have seen Rod Stewarts. There are a lot of pictures of it on the internet. I THINK he bases his on Pittsburg. He told Piers Morgan it takes up the entire top level of this LA home. Doesn't look that big in the pictures, but then I don't know how big his attic is.

I have no idea of the gages but the biggest model railroad I have ever seen was in Germany not far from Stuttgart, I can't explain the size but massive comes to mind and it was 3 stories high and like a city block long and half a city block wide. They actually charge entry for you to go in and look at it. My husbands family was into model trains and when I first started dating my husband he had 2, his smallest was 6 foot by 12 foot set on the base of an old snooker table. His other was in about 20 pieces that slotted together each about 6 foot by 4 foot, they actually had like slot car tracks also and the cars would stop at crossings when the barriers come down. He never mentioned them until the first xmas I spent at his parents farm and they are from Germany so I was surprised that their xmas tree was this silver tinsel thing with all these amazing hand carved ornaments that were obviously very old. His mother said I will never buy another real looking xmas tree with green stuff on it until they grow out of their train sets because I lose them every year. I got what she meant when I saw them. All the very realistic trees were from expensive real looking xmas trees. After his father died and his Mum sold the farm he sold the big one for $15 000 to someone that was going to add it to their existing one and charge entry like what I later saw in Germany. We kept the other for a few years but he decided on a real pool table instead of a train set one and swapped it with someone for what he wanted.
