I would be completely devastated if I saw Bon Jovi and these two songs were not played. I went to Aerosmith concerts with a kind of hero worship, so while the older the songs the more I got excited, but I was tripping the whole time regardless. Not so much with Bon Jovi. So are these songs the equivalent to IDWTMAT and Rag Doll? Do fans who take the time to visit Bon Jovi message boards rip apart these songs and long for Runaway and ??. Are we the only 145 people who want the concerts we want? Not worthy of another thread on subject but Bon Jovi comes to mind when the setlist thing is talked about and why they are still selling massive tickets......and not appropriate to yet again jack a thread

I suspect every band is like this. Metallica fans hate it when they play the 'hits' as well. When I'm at Metallica, that's all I want to hear. I mean, I don't mind hearing something unknown if it is catchy and rocks, but for the most part I want the songs I know.

With Bon Jovi, I feel like the hard rock purists completely abandoned them long ago. Many fans abandoned them way back in the 80s, and the remaining ones in the early 90s. Thus, everyone who goes to Bon Jovi concerts these days has generally stuck through with them for everything and appreciates every era of their career. Bon Jovi's price points are also generally slightly lower than Aerosmith's which allows them to fill arenas. I still believe that Aerosmith would have more success filling arenas if they dropped their price. Regarding setlist, I feel like Bon Jovi mixes it up a lot more. They also do more songs (25+ songs) and their catalog isn't quite as expansive as Aerosmith's. Also, Bon Jovi really only has four or five albums everyone wants to hear a lot of songs from: Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep the Faith, These Days, and Crush. And then they play a couple of more recent songs (like "Have a Nice Day" and "Who Says You Can't Go Home") and 3-4 songs from their latest record. And other than "Runaway", doing stuff from their first two albums is a nice rarity and a treat but is not required to make fans happy. With Aerosmith, people want to hear stuff from all 15 albums depending on the fan, and it can be hard to please all segements of the fanbase, especially when you only do 19 or 20 songs.
With Aerosmith, the hard rock fans never really abandoned them, and Aerosmith never totally abandoned hard rock either. It's just that Aerosmith's pop-rock material became more successful than their hard rock material. But because Aerosmith's catalog is so large and there are so many types of fans with different preferences at a given show, it can be very difficult to please everyone when you're restricted to a 19-20 song set. But given how often Aerosmith tours, I really wish they would mix it up a bit more and give some songs a break in favor of others. I really don't think the world would end if they played "Crazy" instead of "Cryin'" or "One Way Street" instead of "Walkin' the Dog".

I think rock purist pretty much abandoned them from the beginning. Some did. But many rock fans (not just pop fans) bought Slippery When Wet and New Jersey in the 80s simply because that was the rock music that was available at the time. It wasn't really until harder rock music broke into the mainstream in the late 80s and early 90s that a lot of rock fans of that generation abandoned pop-rock acts like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, etc. in favor of the harder music that had now become more accessible (i.e. the breakthrough success of heavy metal acts like Metallica, Megadeth, and Skid Row, traditional hard rock bands like Guns N' Roses and the Black Crowes, and grunge acts like Soungarden, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana).

I guess I don't get this. What the hell is "rock purist"? If it is something that sucks just a little more than what is popular, ok. Then its a statement and you can have it.

I don't go for this purist crap either. If a song has a good beat and I like it, I don't care what it is or who wrote it. I found myself singing Janet Jackson's Escapade under my breath today while walking Baxter. (actually all day, it's in my head lol) I'm sure the rock purists or music nazis of the world who would read that would have me burnt at the stake. But whatever. I do what I want

I completely agree with both of you. I was just pointing out that there is a certain type of fan out there that only likes hard rock and heavy metal and cringes at anything even remotely pop or otherwise different. That's fine, whatever. I enjoy all different types of music including almost everything Bon Jovi has done and almost everything Metallica has done and every Aerosmith song save for a handful and some rap and a lot of country and healthy doses of Michael Jackson and Britney Spears and as Steven would say I could give two fucks what the hard rock purists think. I enjoy almost everything in the hard rock genre but welcome rock artist exploration into other genres and enjoy many other genres as well.
