Metallica’s By Request Tour Features Few RaritiesDaniel Eriksson 06.03.2014 Metallica Metallica are currently touring Europe with their By Request tour. Fans who purchased tickets got to vote on what songs the band should play at each show. Guitarist Kirk Hammett says that he is surprised by the lack of requested rarities from fans. Said Hammett in an interview with MTV (via Blabbermouth): “It's really amazing because, at the onset of this, we thought that the fans would pick all weird stuff and kind of leave all the songs that we've been playing forever and ever alone, but as the results started coming in, people just voted for all the same stuff that we already played. Like, the top songs were songs like 'Nothing Else Matters,' 'Enter Sandman,' 'Sad But True,' 'Creeping Death' ... And in a lot of different places, it was similar, too, which was interesting to us. There have been, like, three or four songs that have come through that have been songs that we don't usually play, and we were hoping that we would get a few more of those types of songs, but we didn't.” Hammett also talked about the one surprise request that the band received: “When we looked at all the results - because we got the results before the tour started - we noticed that the most weirdest, most unusual request was from Finland, and it was for 'The Frayed Ends of Sanity.' And we thought, 'Yes! We have a place where they actually wanna hear 'The Frayed Ends of Sanity.'' Because we've never played that before. It was a song that we never paid much attention to, it's a pretty deep cut. So we've been rehearsing that song a lot, and we're gonna play it tonight [May 28] for the very first time, and we're really psyched. I just hope that we'll be able to play it well, because it's so cold onstage. But yeah, I think it's gonna be pretty exciting, and it's gonna be a Metallica first tonight here in Helsinki.” www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/News/en-us/Metallica-Request-Tour-Features-Few-Rarities.aspx

This has been mention here before. What a great idea. But God knows with the votes they would end up with a worse set then we see now and WTW played 8 times a night.

Yeah, I posted about the tour before. This is the first time I've seen that the rarities weren't requested though. I agree, and this proves it, that the same setlist would result from an Aerosmith requests tour. The wrong people end up voting it seems.

For Aerosmith if they were going to do a by request thing it should be for two songs in the set. One vote given for a selection from 5 old school rarities and the second selection from 5 or 6 seldom played post comback songs.
As for Metallica I haven't seen them live for quite some time but they always did a good job of selecting from their entire catologue to begin with. When I saw them in '89 for And Justice For All the played almost every song they had. Obvioulsy they can't do that today.

I have always been a big Megadeth fan, so for a long time I just couldnt bring myself to continue following Metallica. But I have seen them live, and I must say, they really bring it with their entire catalogue. I am surprised more of their fanbase didn't vote for the rarities, but the more i think about it, the "greatest hits" voting makes sense.
Kudos to Metallica for trying to engage their fanbase though. I love the idea of fans requesting songs.

www.blabbermouth.net/news/metallica-official-footage-of-oslo-concert/OH PLEASe to any Naysayers I call BS and/or sour grapes!! These guys are innovative and serious musicians and sincerely care about thier fans and body of work! They are testing their fking market with the requesst tour! They like to practice and know their catalog. Look how they are releasing these organized mind blowing snippits to give a sampling of what they do. This show would have blown me away and you also got SLAYER, Mastadon, Ghost and Gojira. I mean if you don't like metal you might not enjoy them. They have also recently stated they will be back to working on their next album and tenatively plan to tour in the U.S. 2015/2016. And thru all the hard work James still had time to pick up a narrating gig on "The Hunt"

^ Were there naysayers here? I think its a great thing they are doing to have the requests tour. It just goes to show though that most people at shows want to hear the songs that are popular, as opposed to deep cuts.

You sound like you may have a slight bias Cooop but I was speaking to the masses as well. I think it was already mentioned here they get a lot of people complaining just like Aero do...but you can state a case for the differences between the 2 bands. Bottom line Metallica knows and is ready to fire off their catalog!
