Wow, time flies. It was 10 years ago today, June 24th 2004, by far the worst Aerosmith show I ever saw. They played Cryin' 3 times, with delays before and after each play. In my 19 or 20 times seeing them, this was the only show I ever left really let down. 01 - Toys in the Attic 02 - Love in an Elevator 03 - Cryin' 04 - Same Old Song and Dance 05 - Cryin' 06 - The Other Side 07 - Cryin' 08 - Road Runner 09 - Jaded 10 - Back Back Train 11 - Shame, Shame, Shame 12 - Stop Messin' Around 13 - Dream On 14 - Draw the Line 15 - Baby, Please Don't Go 16 - Mother Popcorn 17 - Walk This Way 18 - Sweet Emotion Encore: 19 - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing 20 - Train Kept A-Rollin' www.setlist.fm/setlist/aerosmith/2004/tweeter-center-mansfield-ma-4bd77f86.html

Brutal. They should have given out free tees or something for that.

Just when you think you made it through without IDWTMAT, they throw it in the encore - OUCH! Pretty brutal setlist.

I would be curious hearing the logic behind playing that 3 times. Was it supposed to be a joke? Did they want to play a 20-song set but weren't prepared to play over 18 different songs? Were they trying to piss off somebody? Were they trying to practice Cryin' or judge the audience's reaction to it for some reason? Otherwise, with their vast catalog and self-professed difficulty trying to choose set lists from it, I cannot see any other logic for doing that.
Then again, trying to apply logic has left me baffled before.

They were recording, for the movie Be Cool if I recall correctly.

Yeah, they were recording it for a movie and it was a fucking nightmare. I finally convinced a friend that hadn't ever seen them to go. Trying to turn him on to Aerosmith. It didn't work and he never went again.. I remember the band describing this as doing something special for their hometown or something like that.

I also vaguely remember them hyping it up as a special surprise. I always wanted the set-list to be a surprise, so I tried to avoid most news before the shows. I'm not sure if they released any info on the filming before hand, but I was caught completely off guard.
As bad as the set-list looks, the filming of the movie made it much worse. It was a duet with an actress in the movie, (Christinia Milian) who I'm not familiar with and had to look that up. Because it's a movie they had to do a certain amount of set-up and break down between each take. Not sure if they planned on three takes, or if they decided they needed a third on the fly. In any event, it amounted to multiple stoppages where nobody knew what was going on.
After the long delays they decided to play a bunch of tracks from Bobo that nobody seemed to know or really care about. Lots of angry people leaving that show. It was pretty much the exact opposite of what an Aerosmith show is supposed to be.
If there was any silver lining to all this it's that the next time they came around was a complete 180. The November 2005 show at the Garden blew me away. They were in peak form that night.

They were recording, for the movie Be Cool if I recall correctly. Yes! I only watched because of Aerosmith, but I had no idea that they recorded those parts during an actual show.

I remember reading the set for this show the morning after. It was unbelievable then and still unbelievable now.
I understand that the movie probably wanted an authentic live Aerosmith show/crowd....but they could have done 1 take from the actual show, then 2 more takes from before or after the show - the band could have filled those seats up with fan club members or done some other such promotion.
Punishing a crowd that pays good money to see your live show by subjecting them to the same song 3 times, and then not extending the show to make up for those 2 lost spaces in the set is unforgivable. Yet all 5 of those guys did this and have never addressed it or apologized in any way.
At the very least do an extended encore and take a few crowd requests to make up for the triple play....

Yet all 5 of those guys did this and have never addressed it or apologized in any way. I definitely agree that they should have added 2 extra songs to make up for the 2 spots lost. BUT I don't think anyone behind the decision considered it 'punishing.' We fans have heard every Aerosmith song thousands of times... it's hardly punishment to hear one song 3 times. God forbid we have such a first-world problem that we attend a rock concert and get punished, brutally punished I say! I was at the Fenway show so I know what it's like to be disappointed in the moment, but I don't complain about that show because... I got to see Aerosmith at Fenway Park! How cool is that? Song selection wasn't what I wanted but I had a great time. I wonder how we'd feel about the Triple Play Show if they decided to film Toys In The Attic 3 times instead (Toys > SOSAD > Toys > Other Side > Toys). Still punished? What about Big Ten Inch? Whatever they did, someone was gonna love it, and someone wasn't. I constantly feel like what's lacking around here is the ability to see something from someone else's point of view. Like you guys said, the fair thing to do would be to either add 2 extra song slots or do the extra 2 Cryin's before the show for the fan club (though that probably wasn't possible because it would require all of the house lights down and stage/screen on and all that). But that didn't happen. Punishment, I think, is very harsh. Cryin' was an award-winning song, like it or not (not, in my case), so really, we need to let this one go.

Playing a song 3 times to please a movie crew at the expense of pleasing fans that paid good money to see a show is a crock of shit and unacceptable.

No one wants to hear the same song more than once in a set.

Playing a song 3 times to please a movie crew at the expense of pleasing fans that paid good money to see a show is a crock of shit and unacceptable. Exactly. Playing ANY one song 3 times IS punishment for 99.9% of the fans, especially given the other songs they could have played. However, playing Cryin' 3 times is TORTURE for >90% of fans. And yes, I would feel the same thing even if that song was Big 10", Sweet Emotion, etc. Some people can excuse it as "not seeing the other side" as much as they want, but it is a crock of shit in the smelliest possible way to 95-99% of the fans. Oh wait, let's consider the viewpoint of the 0.01% of the fans who were actually nutty (or stoned) enough to enjoy that.
